The Great Resignation Is Accelerating
« on: October 24, 2021, 07:56:33 PM »
In April, the number of workers who quit their job in a single month broke an all-time U.S. record. Economists called it the “Great Resignation.” But America’s quittin’ spirit was just getting started. In July, even more people left their job. In August, quitters set yet another record. That Great Resignation? It just keeps getting greater.

The Economist podcast just did a nice episode on this.

I like getting non-American perspectives - Economist, BBC, Le Monde - but increasingly The Economist feels like an American publication.

Ironically, The Economist is a liberal publication in the British sense and they harp on that pretty frequently, but increasingly feels like a liberal publication in the American sense. A decade or so ago, a very centrist friend (military academy grad, former officer, but not particularly conservative) said that the great thing about The Economist is that it's fundamental perspective hasn't changed since the 19th century, so when you find The Economist leaning left or right, it's probably not The Economist that has done the most changing.

The question I had is perfectly answered in that article

Quote
But while employers (and even Kim Kardashian) have complained that no one wants to work anymore, that's not what the data is showing. Hiring was strong yet again in February, with 6.7 million workers signing on to new jobs. That's higher than the number of workers who quit, suggesting instead that workers were job switching.
