2022: Bitcoin has lost almost half its value since its November high, with cryptocurrency prices continuing to plunge as major economies look to curb their growing popularity.  Its peers have fared worse.

Eventually, I don't know when, but someday Bitcoin will be worthless.

Ah, but in a long enough time scale, so will gold. It's the "when" that counts.

That said, I am glad I didn't buy when my neighbor was emailing me multiple times per week telling me to get into BTC before it was too late. He even gave me $100 in BTC just to get me started. It was right at the absolute peak. I asked him to quit emailing me on this topic and his anti-vax emails (recently retired physician for God's sake). I wonder what he would be sending me now.

My reasons were not so much the financial aspect - I'm willing to buy a lottery ticket now and then, though I haven't done so in at least 20 years. It was the energy cost of BTC that I just find immoral from a cost/benefit point of view. From a carbon emissions point of view, it's like burning money to run your printing press at the mint.

True about gold or anything I guess, but I don't think it's going to be centuries, more like <10 years for bitcoin.  There is absolutely nothing backing it's value.

For the inevitable comparison to the USD:
Yes, the US dollar is fiat, but the USD has the worlds largest economy and the worlds largest military backing it up and it is deeply integrated into existing economies.

>carbon emissions

Yeah, it's pretty dreadful.
