3 Privacy Smartphones for 2019
« on: August 22, 2019, 07:05:24 PM »
Take that Android and iOS!

We've mentioned these before but we are getting close to release and/or pre-order dates so here goes.

Where Canonical failed it looks like Purism will succeed in bringing out a Linux phone from scratch.  Due out in the Q3 of this year they should start shipping within weeks.  You can pre-order.  Looks like this will ship with the basic apps needed (think the first iPhone) to get by plus an App Store as more apps get added.  What is better now than when the first iPhone launched in 2007, there are now many HTML5 web apps available plus 4G LTE.

More info on last minute tweaks.:

Another Linux core phone.  This should be quite a bit cheaper than the Librem 5 (above).  A lot of different OS's have pledged to run on the Pine Phone.  The two that caught my eye: Sailfish OS, which has not been available in the US, UBports, which is the continuation of Ubuntu Phone project Canonical gave up on.  There are other OS's too.  What I like is the idea of an inexpensive Linux phone.  Not yet available for pre-order, but Pine is moving fast so this might be ready by late 2019 or 2020.

This is not Linux, but an Android fork.  What /e/ did was strip out all the Google stuff and spyware and have replaced all the Google cloud based services with their own open source equivalents.  So Gmail has been replaced , Google services replaced, Google store replaced, Chrome replaced, etc.  I like this approach for recognizing that in Android the threat of Google spying come from both the OS and from the suite of Google apps that Android depends on.

No smartphone OEM wants to p##s Google off, so /e/ Foundation is supplying the OS on the best class of refurbished phones.  Currently shipping to the EU only for right now, they are trying to find North American phone refurbishers to partner with.  So you lucky EU folks can get one now.

Pine Phone Update:

Sounds like UBPorts (the continuation of Ubuntu Touch) is the smoothest OS that will be available.  This is not surprising since Ubuntu Touch was pretty far advanced when Canonical turned it over to a community run organization.  UBPorts is probably also going to have the largest array of polished apps since many were developed along with the OS.

As near as I can make out, Pine Phone will be running batches of the phone each with a partner OS installed.

Developer phones are already in production.

Sounds like this is really happening.
