It's not surveilling you.

"Amazon has denied that it uses voice recordings for advertising at the moment, and said that the patent might never actually come to the market."

They're just applying for the patent so that they don't have to pay someone else for it down the road should they ever roll out anything like this.

Your reaction is probably shared by 99.9999% of most people. Most people including myself would never admit such a thing into our homes. The creepiness factor will prevent Amazon from ever coming out with that feature.

It's only listening for trigger words at this time. Trigger words are words that will activate it. Android has it too. There's a lot of research on trigger words, on finding the voice signal out of a cacophony, on accuracy and so on.

Listening for trigger words is not a big deal.  What's in the patent is too invasive and will never go to market. That patent is like defensive domain buying.

And we know that how? ;-)

It is me, I choose not to have such devices and don't use Siri etc.

Unless you have an old device with an older OS, it's already in your pocket.

Android is always listening. Apple is always listening. Even some television sets are listening.

I'm sure there will be some folks who drop out and join the digital Amish stuck behind the HMTL plow, the ones that never adopted WordPress, Drupal, Joomla and other CMS. But they will be in the minority and face increasing irrelevance.

The technology for understanding spoken words and for being able to isolate one human's voice is literally improving every day.  This is the state of technology today and it's not going away.

Voice search via IoT and mobile search is incredibly important and still growing. It'll evolve but it's not going away.

You can jump off the train at the next station. But SEO and Internet Marketing as it is practiced today are on the train with the rest of the world.

There are times these days when the only way I can understand a phone message is to read the Google Voice transcript, because I cannot understand the message by ear. I'm still better than GV in general because I have so much better context, but voice recognition is nothing like what it was 5 years ago.
