Reading around, the screams are louder than when Vista hit.

Windows operating systems seem to be like Star Trek movies, every other one seems to be a dud.

I tried to install it last weekend...updating a Windows 7 Ultimate machine, but I got some critical system driver error and installation stopped. I may try again this weekend.

All of the howls of discontent have me a bit worried. I'm willing to give this OS a chance. I still run 64-bit Vista on my main workstation, and I've never really had any complaints...so I may not be a good person to ask. ;)

There has been so much talk about the new metro UI. The experts seems to agree that it rocks on tablets and sucks on workstations. As I understand you can still use the traditional desktop so I really don't see what all fuss is about. It seems to me that is has become fashionable to hate windows 8.

I for one can't wait to take it for a spin

Yeah, hivemind.  Still, they should make the traditional interface the default for desktops.

I logged in to our MS partner account and found that it was already available for download, so now I have a test install running in VMware.

Again I don't see the problem with the metro ui. It's just a bunch of short-cuts, one of them beeing a link to the old desktop. When i have confirmed that my drivers, anti virus etc. are compatible i will upgrade.

I still haven't setup the RTM, although I did futz around with the first public release. One of the tips I've heard is to make the Desktop shortcut the first on your Metro screen. Whatever tile is in that first slot is the default and will be selected. So if you want to go immediately to the desktop you can just hit Enter as soon as your machine boots...and Walla! Desktop.

I have been playing with it for a few days.  I like it.  As has been said before, the desktop is still there and the new metro stuff should work great on a tablet.

I am really pleased that the 'store' is a core part of it and am already messing with an app to (I hope) make some money with.

I did an Upgrade install...took all of my Windows 7 settings and programs and just updated everything in-place. Oddly enough that is the recommended way to upgrade. I was surprised because I normally do a full upgrade on a blank partition. Once I got the install going it was relatively quick and effortless.  (My original problem was actually a bad DVD...I just downloaded and burned another ISO and voilą!)

Aside from using the Windows key on the keyboard a bit more and learning where all the settings reside I have no complaints yet. Actually I miss the fresh clean install routine, so when I have time I may re-install everything from scratch.

I have no real interest in replacing 7 on the desktop, as 8 doesn't add anything I want. I only moved from Windows 2000 grudgingly, as XP had Bluetooth support. That said, there's talk of MS offering upgrades for £25 (around $39?). At that price, I'd probably upgrade just to have a copy on a VM for website testing.
