Ditching iPhone switching to Samsung Galaxy S3
« on: September 03, 2012, 11:42:37 AM »
I've had an Apple iPhone for I can't remember how long.

With the shambles of the Samsung case it became apparent to me the Samsungs were cheaper iPhones (not really but the court case made me look).

My new phone arrives tomorrow.

If you have a Samsung Galaxy SIII or S3 or whatever you call it, what do you think of it? Any tips on making it better, last longer, cool apps etc.?

I have had an S1 & S2. No issues with either. Moving on to Windows phone now, but I am sure this tip will work on the S3 too -

If you usually use your phone within wifi range, leave wifi turned on on the phone this makes the battery last far longer.

I couldnt disagree more.

WiFi when connected and even worse when not and therefore searching, is very very expensive in power demands.

HSPA on the contrary is much much more power efficient

That is exactly what I thought Jason, but for whatever reason it does make the battery on the S1 & S2 last longer.

Phones nowadays are constantly checking things in the background.

Having just come back from my hols I disabled the data and only switched on the wifi when I needed it. My battery on my Samsung nexus went from a day to 3 days!

Samsung's Galaxy S III outsold the iPhone 4S in the U.S. in August

Louise has the first version of the Galaxy S and it's been a great phone.

I've had an S3 for a few weeks, but I've been too busy to use it for much more than phone, SMS and GPS. From what I've seen, it's a stunning piece of kit though. The Google Maps sat-nav on such a big screen wipes the floor with TomTom. My only problem has been syncing with Outlook. Android wants you to play in the Google ecosystem, and it's not very accommodating if you choose not to. My last phone was an HTC Trinity though (5 year old Windows Mobile 5), so I'd probably be impressed with anything vaguely current. I'd really like to co-opt it into acting as a mini monitor for my Raspberry Pi...

Personally I'm surprised - I've found the Apple walled garden very accomodating - pretty much what you need is already there for you - while Google's Android as very fragmented and disorganised, so you need to put most everything together to get it working anywhere near like an iPhone.

Or have Samsung addressed issues such as iCloud and similar?

Not a s3 but bought a nexus 7 and played on a note.  Why the hell don't emails fit on the damn screen?? I need to keep scrolling sideways which ends up loading another email, urgh.   This is just 1 thing out of a few that don't "just work ;)" like they do on iOS devices.

No problem with emails on my HTC One X. Most things short of a full sized football pitch fit on that screen.

It's not an apple product, so you won't get everything handed on a plate and done for you. Whether you see that as it not being dumbed down and giving you freedom or see it as awkward and poorly coordinated is largely a matter of personal approach.  I suspect most people know which side of that particular fence they are on before ever picking to the device.
