Great way to repurpose a coal plant. Why start from scratch to build a storage facility?

I guess the answer to that question might be line loss. It probably makes a lot of sense to store the excess close to the point of production. That said, a lot of renewable power is generated far from point of use and a lot of the legacy plants are close, so if you actually have excess power, it makes some sense to incur the line loss when you have surplus, store the energy closer to point of use, and then convert it to electricity and only have a short trip to the city.

All power plants in Denmark provide central heating to industry and residential areas so it makes sense to place the storage near the existing infra structure.

I think that you will have the line loss regardless of where you place the storage because the distance to the endpoint is the same

Only if the system is basically inline, that is that it goes from point of production to point of storage to point of use. Some our biggest coal plants can be fairly remote (there's a huge one in Montana somewhere).

So I was thinking of the situation where you might send the power north 500km to the storage facility and then send it back south 200km to the point of use.

Not an issue in Denmark. 500km by 200km covers most of the country. LOL
