F-Secure KEY password manager (free promo)
« on: June 08, 2016, 07:33:10 AM »
If you'd like to check out an interesting password manager I came across F-Secure KEY https://www.f-secure.com/en/web/home_global/key

There was someone re-tweeting that they're giving away free premium accounts until June 10.

KEYDADADA

The premium key lasts 6 months and lets you share passwords between accounts. Not sure what happens after that.

I like the security involved with this app. They don't even ask for your e-mail address when signing up. Everything is encrypted locally. F-Secure only gets an encrypted set of your passwords that they can't read even if they wanted to.

Not sure I'll move to this, but it looks promising in early tests.

Bill thanks. Please remind me, what are you using at present?

i am still on lastpass, but it slows down browsing considerably.

This looks like Yubi Key but it uses your phone rather than a separate key.

Am I understanding this right?

I still use LastPass as well because I paid for a subscription renewal just before the LogMeIn takeover. It's still the best platform for my use, and as I talked so many people into using it, I still have people sharing passwords with me on that platform. It's hard to break away completely.

I also use KeePass and KeePassX. Every time I'm about to switch to those platforms it seems there's another security issue raised. http://www.engadget.com/2016/06/04/keepass-wont-fix-security-hole-due-to-ads/

Although those 2 have basically all of the features of LastPass, and are otherwise probably the best alternatives.

F-Secure KEY looks like a stand-alone Chrome app. It's a normal password manager with browser plug-ins and everything. I'm testing it by importing all of my LastPass credentials. It's not like a YubiKey.

I like the fact that it's Finnish, not USA. Also they take a lot of steps to secure the sharing aspect of the app to make sure your data doesn't escape. It looks like they're doing a lot of things right.

A couple of things I've found in F-Secure KEY that I'm not crazy about: Password generation will only make a 32 character password. Most of my passwords are a lot longer than that. They also don't let you attach files to a password record. I got used to that with LastPass, and it's hard to give up.

Got it. Thanks. I was looking for something more than just all the pictures on their site...

It's nice to see a lot of development in this arena. F-Secure, the Intel one. It looks like there's a big push to get people onto password managers which will make it a lot easier to improve other areas.

Of course, education has to happen too. I got our company to get Lastpass Enterprise and I found that overwhelmingly people set it to remember their email and password and they still choose simple, easily guessable passwords. I have yet to see anyone implement 2FA

For me it depends on one thing - will I ever have to enter the password on a phone or tablet (99% chance no).

If no, long, complex, all chars, random

If yes, short (which I think of as 12-16 chars), alphanum, no ambiguous chars (l and 1 for example), random

Google accounts will accept passwords up to 100 characters in length. My main Google accounts are nearly 100 characters long. If I can find the information I usually try to use almost the maximum number of characters allowed. Why not the maximum? I like to keep the bad guys guessing if they bother with these monsters. My thinking is, 'if the password isn't something I could ever remember anyway, might as well make it as long as possible'.

Today is the last day for this free promotion. If you want to give this tool a try on multiple devices, install the software and enter the code today.
