My son's Server story = SAD
« on: October 11, 2014, 03:12:22 PM »

[10:56:42 AM] Anonymous User: why was there no backup
[11:01:06 AM] Christian Mackin: Very long and horrible story.
[11:01:39 AM] Christian Mackin: We were in a SAN storage array and specificall located in a 12 disk RAID 5 array.
[11:01:50 AM] Christian Mackin: One of the RAID 5 disks failed.
[11:02:23 AM] Christian Mackin: While the array was rebuilding to the hot swap disk, another diesk failed.
[11:02:51 AM] Christian Mackin: A RADI 5 configuration cannot recover from a 2 disk failure
[11:03:07 AM] Christian Mackin: So they went to the storage backup
[11:03:44 AM] Christian Mackin: Unfortunately the IDIOTS backed up the files to the same disk they were backing up.
[11:04:02 AM] Christian Mackin: Obviously you cannot recover from this.
[11:04:23 AM] Christian Mackin: They sent the 12 disk array to a recovery facility.
[11:04:55 AM] Christian Mackin: They gave them $2000 to expedite determining if the files could be recovered.
[11:05:29 AM] Christian Mackin: The company was able to fully recover the entire volume.
[11:05:58 AM] Christian Mackin: So therefore they extored my service provider for $18,000
[11:06:14 AM] Christian Mackin: Which of course my provider does not have.
[11:06:46 AM] Christian Mackin: So he came to me and said that if I want my data back I must pay the money to the extorsionists.
[11:07:18 AM] Christian Mackin: Therefore we find ourselves at an alternate location with more resources.
[11:07:36 AM] Christian Mackin: PROVIDER WAS Utopiasystems.net
[11:07:49 AM] Christian Mackin: Now I'm at Rackspace.
[11:08:08 AM] Christian Mackin: I am setting up the network differently as you can imagine

Bummer. I guess Utopian doesn't mean the same thing to them as it would to us.
