Hosting suggestions, unusual requirements
« on: September 18, 2012, 11:07:06 AM »
I use leased Dell Poweredges and HP DL360s at Node4 in the UK for our website hosting, but their base servers are geared towards regular hosting, and now I have a different requirement:

750Gb+ HD space, ideally RAID 1
12GB+ memory
Lowish chipset - i.e. a single, fairly modern dual or quad core Intel chip would do
64 bit Windows
8+ v4 IPs

This will be for running VMware Workstation, running a selection of Windows VMs going back to 98SE; plus half a dozen Ubuntu Server VMs. I'd also likely run Advanced Web Ranking from this machine on the rare occasions that I run ranking reports.

So, essentially, lots of HD space and memory, minimal bandwidth and power. No major support requirements, doesn't have to be in the UK. It also doesn't necessarily have to be a dedicated leased machine. However, I'd like it to be relatively cheap. Any ideas?

http://www.kimsufi.co.uk/

OVH are a good bet, they have a dedicated server range and a 'kimsufi' range which seems to fall into your requirements. They're hosted in France.

extra IPs are £1 a month, though im not sure if you pay a separate professional fee so you may want to take a closer look.

you can choose your own OS which they'll install for you. if you have your own windows licenses there's an admin area option for you to add license keys to avoid any extra monthly fees.

From the look of it they're using desktop-grade hardware instead of Xeons to keep costs down. For my purposes, that's pretty much perfect. Thanks.

Yep, cheap and fairly powerful. There's a dedicated range @ ovh.co.uk but they cost a bit more.

Is it just me or is ovh a bit, erm, special? Not a dedicated user but for their shared plans, they got an interface in the control panel that must have been written by somebody on crack. And their support kept telling me whatever issue I had must be on my side, even if on my side there was nothing at all.
