HD Twin Tuner PVR
« on: December 22, 2010, 08:50:07 PM »
Just found out that the PVR I bought 6 weeks ago is only one tuner!

Simply cack, the toppy I have from 4 yeats ago has more than that. So you can record two things at once.

Have you any recommendations as to what is good since I am going to get a refund onthe one I bought.

Humax HDR-FOX T2

This one looks good. I was after HD too.

I dont want sky if I can help it btw.

I have a humax Freesat and a toppy freeview.  The Toppy wins every time with MyStuff added.

Humax is slow, clunky and annoying. It has HD, and "works" but for you I would recommend another Toppy.

Why does the toppy win?

The Humax is solid enough, but I have to go and make a cup of tea if I want to delete a folder.  And as for searching for programmes, the Humax is such hard work.

The Mysuff software for the toppy, allows you to set up any sort of search, by series, by channel, by keyword in title, and put them into folders as you record them....

It really is flexible.  On top of the things like the pip work, you can continue to listen to the chanel you are on while you seach what else is on (news or whatever)  while the humax goes quite while it thinks about it.

The downside is you have to be a bit geeky to set it up, and then you have to learn what the different buttons on the remote do.

I recommend the humax to old people, or non geeky. I recommend the toppy to you. But with Mystuff....

Did you have Mystuff on your Toppy?

Dint have mystuff. I do have an older toppy that was top bollocks 3 years ago.

If mystuff is a TAP I will give it a go.

Which toppy do you have the 700£ one?

No the freeview cheaper one.   Yes it is the only tap worth having, and is simplicity itelf to install.  It pulling in a couple of other taps that store the program data and stuff I think.

Send the other back and go back to the toppy with Mystuff :)

Think that it must be something about this industry and Toppies.  Maybe the geek tinker factor.

Part way through replacing my trusty toppy myself.  Switching to freesat through frustration of worsening freeview service locally (and refusal to pay for sky).  Have to say though that I've been pretty unimpressed with the PVRs I've seen.  Either the hardware hasn't been what I've wanted or the software has been lacking.

In the end I opted to build a silent PC with twin freesat tuners.  Cost will be about the same (with enough wheeling/deeling), but it will have the advantage of also acting as my music centre and storage/gallery for way too many photos.

Running Windows 7 Media Centre and it's all pretty good so far. However so far it is music + photos + blueray only.  Need to take some time off to sort the freesat.

Do you have any advice on the build.

I bought a Philips twin tuner box, but I am thinking of building something bespoke.

I have been looking at the BlackGold stuff

Just wondering what you chose in the end from motherboard, OS etc the whole lot.

Cheers

Happy to share, but don't suppose it will help much.  When I started getting serious about the build I suddenly realised:
1. How out of date my hardware knowledge had become
2. How much utter shite other people spout on the topic

I built a test rig out of a drawer full of spares. This handles playback only because I don't have room in the case for tuners and my wife seems to think that children come before gadgets, so time has been limited.  That's running an underpowered atom motherboard and handles playback surprisingly well.  win7 interfact is a bit sluggish, but I suspect a little more RAM would fix that. However it play/rips dvds, handles my ridiculous photo collection and looks after my music.

For twin HD recording though - not a chance. I found the chip/board combo to be a bit of a minefield which is probably another reason that I haven't committed to finishing this.  In the end I was looking at intel i3 chips.  Decision based as much on price as anything - but I suspect that they are overkill.

Definitely the black gold twin sat tuner.  I already reclaimed a quiet samsung 1Tb drive from a system I was breaking, so that was another freebie.    Also want a Logitech diNovo Mini Wireless Keyboard as I am currently using laptop + VNC rather than a keyboard which is rather retarded.

Can't remember the name of the remote I am using.  It is a wireless one rather than IR, as the PC itself is in a cupboard.  It was cheap and words well though and has all the media pc functions.

What are you looking at?
