« on: May 10, 2011, 10:55:34 AM »
MS is rumored to be buying Skype.

Here is one take on why it makes sense:

Done deal. http://www.microsoft.com/Presspass/press/2011/may11/05-10CorpNewsPR.mspx

Damn, the Danish guy - one of the founders - is again making billions of this. Awesome. He owns 13% still..

I'm still wondering if the cell carriers will view this as a threat or is Skype pretty much expected on smartphones now?

I guess it had to end up in the hands of either MS or Google.  Seems to be a good play for MS, considering who they are they have had a hard time in the smartphone space, this may give them the edge.

As a Linux user I hope they don't pull the plug on the Linux version.

ACk...I posted another thing to this..

My hope is that Microsoft doesn't ruin it.  They've screwed things up so much that I have to wonder when the app won't work at all.

So far so good for the Linux crowd.

…fundamental to the value proposition of communications is being able to reach everybody, whether they happen to be on your device or not. And I think that, in fact, will be one of our competitive advantages, both for the Skype communications services, and in fact, for the devices as we move forward.”

They've screwed things up so much
They haven't 'screwed up' much more than anyone else recently, and in terms of privacy and underhand corporate crap, they have come in for far less stick than Apple, Facebook and Google recently (IMO). If any of those had taken over Skype I would have stopped using it in a heart beat.

Of course, it could be argued that Microsoft just aren't as competent at abusing our personal data or being devious as the others - but they sure seem like the lesser of four evils to me. Sure, not much in it, sure, but if I had to choose ..etc

.. and much as I like Skype, they weren't exactly safe pair of hands - every change they have done for the last couple of years has moved a step closer to stopping using it. Fortunately, now I use the linux version I am free of most of the 'bells and whistles' that have been annoying me. I just hope they leave the damned thing alone - it works OK, let me carry on using it as it is please.
