Yikes. They have not sold out all the iPad 1's yet. But I think this makes some sense: for the time being it is in Apple's best interest to stay ahead of the competition in tablets. The iPad2 is nice but I don't see it being able to hold the fort against all the Android and WebOS tablets for a whole year on it's own. This might explain some of the shortages - they don't want to stockpile.

But the hardware/tech guesses sounds plausible
