NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wi-Fi Gigabit Router
« on: March 17, 2016, 09:12:33 PM »
Old Apple Airport Extreme died after 4 years or so of good service, but it was in need of upgrading.  I went to Amz best-sellers and picked the highest rated router and 1-day shipped it.

Man! These things have really gone plug-n-play! I was dreading dealing with all that ip# bullshit. Nope, plug it into the modem, tell it to run auto-setup. Bingo! Done! Took 10 minutes, including unboxing.

For those who want to block access by MAC address on a schedule (kids at night, etc) this router doesn't have that feature yet.

Thanks RC. My Airport Extreme is acting up as well and have difficulty sending the signal through all 3 floors in the house.

Actually I found it locally here cheaper than Amazon! That is not usually the case:

I think I'm going to get the bundle with a repeater as well for $240.

wait a minute if you haven't already bought it. With kids, you might want that competitive one I saw mentioned as having scheduled blocking by device MAC.

Couple of things I've learned:

2.4ghz has noticeably better distance than 5ghz. 5ghz wall penetration seemed poor by comparison, too.

Assigning priorities seemed to boost speed enough to notice.  I set my primary laptop and the roku to 'high' --the rest seem about the same speed as the Airport Extreme.

Any OpenWRT router will do this if you flash it with Gargoyle

You might have to assign a forced static IP to that MAC address.

Lol, I haven't clicked buy yet, but following this closely.

I certainly don't want to mess with ips, mac etc. We only have a couple of kids stopping by and all they do is minecraft and Youtube.

 ;D

Until you have the router that does both, it's a question of which matters more

Rumbas, did you see my comment on that other post?

Man, this sure beats unplugging the phone wires on the landline at 2am

You have girls that are -or soon will be- talking & sexting all night long.  If I still had kids in the house, I'd make having a nuke-a-device-on-schedule an absolute top priority.

As parents, we were before the every-kid-has-a-smartphone era so we didn't have to contend with that.  As grandparents, we've seen (& heard via our high school teacher daughter) many, many firsthand accounts of device addiction.  During the day is one thing, but when it causes long-term sleep deprivation that's a health issue.

And then take a look at the router logs. And your neighbor's logs, hhh. Because they ARE going to buy their own devices without telling you.
