I've been watching this unfold with some dismay.  Hopefully, a minor manufacturer will come out with an Ubuntu phone with decent stats.

Part of the US problem is the telcos all want a subsidy like MS provided to try a new OS.  Only Samsung has deep pockets, if they really want to launch Tizen.

ADDED:

I suppose I could try to load Ubuntu on a tablet or maybe somebody will come out with an Ubuntu tablet in 2014.  Seems like a long wait till sometime maybe in 2015.

So it looks like Sailfish as a long shot, if it should make it out of Europe, or  Firefox OS which I'm having a hard time getting enthusiastic about. Sigh.

Two Ubuntu phones in 2014.

Sailfish OS will release a phone probably in EU, then expand.

But they will also attack Android in 2 ways:

1. A sailfish launcher for Android will be released. This will give Android users a chance to try Sailfish while still running Android.
2. Following up will be a complete os installer with ROM reflash so you can install sailfish on your own hardware.

Samsung is getting shy with Tizen.  I don't see the geek/Linux/open source faithful getting behind Tizen even if it is Linux based, if Samsung is just going to turn it into another closed garden.

The Meizu phone running Ubuntu looks binteresting to me.
