Report: iPhone Sales Fail Triggered "Fire Drill" at Apple

https://www.thurrott.com/apple/194366/report-iphone-sales-fail-triggered-fire-drill-at-apple

For the last 2 or 3 weeks, the buzz in my feeds has been about Apple trying to redirect attention away from Iphone unit sales.  Debbie says she doesn't know of another blockbuster category in Apple's future to replace the Iproduct line.  Anecdotally, I just don't hear much from family/friends Iphone fanbois anymore.  After all, phones are so 20th century.

One of my kids said yesterday "They're giving away an iPhone X, why would I want that?"

For the prices they are asking for the X line iPhones I want both fingerprint unlock and facial recognition.  Even with that the price is too much.  If I had to get an iPhone it would be either an 8Plus or an XR the budget model.

“Company executives moved some marketing staff from other projects to work on bolstering sales of the latest handsets in October, about a month after the iPhone XS went on sale

I heard Seth Godin make some comment (on his podcast I think) about how Tim Cook's only strategy is to "milk the purple cow" (reference to Seth's 2002 book) for as much money as possible. In other words, to pour money into marketing, into incremental feature improvements that people might want, but don't dream of, talk about, wait in line for.

It's not clear that Jobs would have had another "purple cow" in him, but it's clear that nobody at Apple right now does.

It's hard to remember what a departure the original iPhone was from what else was on the market. Now as quality phones become commoditized, it will get harder and harder for Apple to produce a remarkable phone.

"Look, Apple has turned into the iPhone and the seven dwarves. People talk about the services component, again recurring revenue. But, it’s really, Apple, and it’s an incredible problem to have, but the most profitable device in the history of business and probably the most transformative device, the iPhone ... The company is ... If the iPhone sneezes, Apple’s gonna get a cold. And there’s some insecurity and some wobbliness around people not replacing their iPhone as often."
