I don't follow Cyanogen or the root crowd, but I believe Cyanogen was caught in some sort of userbase betrayal or scandal a few months ago?

I would have picked it up from my android-related feeds. The gist was that the larger android community -not just reddit- is pulling away from supporting Cyanogen.  Found this in a comment, just as an example. It was pretty much a shitstorm when I picked up on it.

They're catching a ton of flak this past weekend on reddit.com/r/android, supposedly they're going to do an AMA this coming week. I'll have to check it out and report on it come Wednesday or Thursday cause I've not at all liked what I've been hearing about the OnePlus One or Cyanogen Inc. these past few days.

Seen so many "are you kidding me?!" type things in the past few days. Examples can be seen in this one I found real quick.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/2nxm71/oneplus_and_cyanogen_on_brink_of_breakup_after/

Cyanogen Inc. basically made a deal that screws OnePlus One owners in India. Can't say how I feel about it as they did do what was in their best interests as a company overall, at the expense of OnePlus One users in the country. And that's just one thing.

Apparently some people were buying new devices and receiving what were clearly refurbished ones. Again, not saying it happened, but it's not a good thing as an end user to read about things like that happening or potentially happening.

Then there's the touchscreen issues some people have seen. People saying that the RMA process is hell, assuming they hear back from anyone at all, with more than a few having had to open PayPal disputes to get any kind of response from anyone at OnePlus at all.

Things like that. It doesn't bode well for OnePlus or Cyanogen Inc. That's ignoring everything that went down when they went corporate in the first place revolving around Focal and all that.

I just scanned this recent thread, but it appears that reddit still ain't happy. I believe I saw similar in androidcentral.  At any rate, the question is whether Cyanogen's strong enough to go corporate without the massive hacker-ish support it has enjoyed.

So Cyanogen's Big Plan To Seize Android Is ... To Jump In Bed With Microsoft
http://readwrite.com/2015/03/24/cyanogen-microsoft-team-up-google

Might be an interesting combo, but it will likely take a long time to come close to killing off Google's lead.

Not so much, not that I've seen, but Cyanogen/rooting/off-brand hardware is a fringe area for me.  But, IMO, it's going to take a crapload of well-executed PR to overcome the distrust issue.
