It makes sense.  We are still thinking about car design with the traditional engine and drivetrain layout.  Electric vehicles can put the motors in or very near the wheel hubs and they just need a platform for the battery units.

What's going on now with electric vehicles resembling ICE vehicles today is a lot like how early cars looked like horseless carriages.
