Last pass alternative
« on: June 23, 2011, 01:30:31 PM »
Last pass has come up in a couple of threads.  I've been looking at similar functionality and the solution we're looking at seems promising so I thought I would share.

Where we're coming from: Not entirely happy with the current cloud solutions.  I am not opposed to storing such data in the cloud (although it would require updating agreed practices with a couple of sensitive clients), however I haven't been bowled over the the approach taken by any that I have looked at.

We've, rather disappointingly, ended up with a short list of 1: http://keepass.info/   Data is store locally, which isn't right for everyone, but is perfect for us as group access is a requirement.  We'll be storing data in a shared network location.

Plugins are available for IE, FF and Chrome. Can be run from a thumb drive (protected by master password) if that is your bag.

still have a few unanswered questions, but it looks like a contender.

Just reminds me of

1. A site called ‘Who Represents‘ where you can find the name of the agent that represents a celebrity. Their domain name… www.whorepresents.com
2. Experts Exchange, a knowledge base where programmers can exchange advice and views at www.expertsexchange.com
3. Looking for a pen? Look no further than Pen Island at www.penisland.net
4. Need a therapist? Try Therapist Finder at www.therapistfinder.com
5. There’s the Italian Power Generator company… www.powergenitalia.com
6. And now, we have the Mole Station Native Nursery, based in New South Wales www.molestationnursery.com
7. If you’re looking for computer software, there’s always www.ipanywhere.com
8. Welcome to the First Cumming Methodist Church. Their website is www.cummingfirst.com
9. Then, of course, there’s these brainless art designers, and their website www.speedofart.com
10. Want to holiday in Tahoe? www.gotahoe.com

Can't believe I've been on that site for days without even spotting that.  I'm getting slow in my old age.

Awesome list there... ;-)

LastPass does have an Enterprise version. When they were developing it there was talk that you could use your own servers as the cloud. Not sure how it works, but its available now according to the site.

If you want an alternative KeePass and 1Password are the main ones I keep hearing about.

Despite the comedy name, I'm pretty impressed with keepass so far.

We don't currently have the need for this, but I can see how you could run it cloud-side without handing over your data to anyone as well.

You can additionally protect your database with a keyfile.  So you could put your database in any shared location (even something like dropbox, box.net or tonido), but keep a copy of the keyfile on every authorised system (or even USB stick).  The database would then remain synced, but would be useless without the keyfile.

If you want an extra layer of foil on your hat you could even just use something like cpanel webdisk on a hosting account somewhere for the main db storage. That way no-one but you / your team have access to you database - even in encryped form.

On a PC I always used roboform. I loved it. But then I switched to mac and it was not available. Not it is, but they use a cloud based one.

What you are looking for is the local/software / usb version. It is great.

I currently use 1password with the dropbox sync function. I like this quite a bit. The chrome plugin kind of blows though.

yeah - if you look at the branded t-shirts they are selling, the capitalisation clearly shows they are ..... ermm ..... 'milking' the 'misunderstanding'
