Why I知 done with Chrome

A few weeks ago Google shipped an update to Chrome that fundamentally changes the sign-in experience. From now on, every time you log into a Google property (for example, Gmail), Chrome will automatically sign the browser into your Google account for you. It値l do this without asking, or even explicitly notifying you.

Amazing and scary.  There are so many people using Chrome that don't understand the implications of this.  Thanks bill.

If you want to disable the forced login, a user on Hacker News points out a workaround that could change at any time. Copy and paste this text into your browser痴 address bar: chrome://flags/#account-consistency. Then disable the option labeled, 的dentity consistency between browser and cookie jar, and restart your browser.

Ironically, just now, in Chrome and not logged in, Google offers the helpful message that I can do a "privacy check."

Sure, why not?

Where does it take me? The Chrome login screen.

They REALLY want you logged into Chrome

Since I don't use CHrome on my Android phone I looked to see if I could uninstall.  If I remember right, I could only disable it, not uninstall.  I hit disable and got a warning that Biblical Level Bad Things would happen if Chrome was not available, other apps would quit working, etc. So I backed out.

I know you all know this, but if you like Chrome but don't want the google hooks you could use Chromium.

I saw ff stats again this week, dropped to under 5% worldwide. I had to sit down.

Related: now in Google Maps

妬f you want to save a home or work address in Google Maps, you now have to allow activity tracking throughout Google services.

They threw a lot of developers under the bus trying to keep up with Chrome. There was the memory bloat issue that took a long time to fix, but after fixing it they sort of did a "move fast and break things" approach with extensions. It is quite hard to create a toolbar or such, when it was super easy for a long time.

A big part of Chrome's growth with promotion on YouTube & the Google home page, but another big part was all the Flash security plugin update warnings that negative option bunded Chrome installs with the download. And then in Firefox trying to make itself compatible with Chrome plugins & nuking compatibility with a lot of older extensions they lessened their point of differentiation vs Chrome. About the biggest point of differentiation is not being tracked so pervasively by Google, but as stated above that can be done with Chromium or a bunch of other browsers like Brave, Cliqz, Vivaldi, etc.

Nice heads-up Bill. I oly use Chrome as part of seeing how client sites look on all major browsers.
