I wonder if a crowd sourced directory would still work. I'm guessing not, a search engine is 'good enough'.

Same.  Having seen how the majority react so negatively to forum format vs social, I don't think you could coax them to use it.

Reddit and the like are sort of that in a way, but more timely and a hell of a lot more successful.
