Damn US. Hours ahead! I think they should do it for real.

I'm not sure if it's an April fool or a brilliant real device.

They'd be cheap enough to make, easy enough to use and pay for themselves a hundred times over. It's also in the one area Amazon need (and want) to expand in.

I don't think it's a joke. Looks to be some sort of RFID or chip transponder on a button that appears (best I can tell) to update your account's cart.  I don't want it -who needs YET ANOTHER Amazon dependency?- but I think this is right on target for our convenience-driven lifestyle in the US.

I hope they have security in mind. Ordering 10,000 rolls of toilet paper would be an excellent/costly prank.

Indeed, sometimes it may not be possible to press the button quick enough :)

With their drone service and this, it could be the new way of doing things.

>10k rolls

We raised 4 girls. Don't even talk to me about toilet paper.

If someone could make something like this for beer and alcohol they would make a fortune. Push a button and someone shows up at your door 15 minutes later with a 6 pack.

One of the big pizza chains or fast food restaurants that want to deliver could make a killing as well.

Doc, you are right.  I bet Amazon has a dozen or so patents on the concept though.  So, who ever does this will need to either give them a cut or lawyer up.

Open source clones have already appeared and commercial equivalents already exist. The hardware, based on the stuff I read, is almost identical. It needs some polish, but I bloody love the idea.

I learnt about the Photon, when I was looking to see if there was such a thing as an "internet button" - In practice what I wanted was a 2FA thing that sat on a desk and had to be pushed to authenticate. All I'd need it to do was to ping a defined URL with some information.

Press button, turn on, ping, turn off.

I never got there, but..... I still love the idea.

we're looking at the app side of this for a client - so a virtual 'panic' button but actually the same ultimate mechanism, just straight to app.  don't think they can have patented that bit :)

From a "wow" POV, I love that they're allowiing manufacturers to build a physical button into their products - very clever way to tie companies in!
