Missed this. I was just wondering the other day how much recurring subscription income Amazon gets from this. $100/year/user X 41 million users = 4.1 billion dollars! The scale of Amazon is staggering.

This was while out driving and I was thinking of all the things I "subscribe" to these days: Amazon Prime, Audible, ISP bill, Netflix (cancelled that actually), etc, etc.

When I was a kid I think my family had three subscriptions (not counting utilities billed on a usage basis):
 - the local paper
 - the phone base local charge
 - milk and eggs delivered by the milkman

Pffft! Amateurs.

Actually, that's impressive. Think about it. Costco charges $50 year and I bet the average Costco spend is $3000.

I bet that of those 41 million members, there are 5 million members with under a $200 spend. There's probably some large number - 500,000? - who spend essentially nothing. Which makes that membership fee 100% profit.

It's like when I was a Netflix member but never watched any movies. Didn't seem like a lot of money, but they make bank of members like me.

BTW, don't the humans in that facility seem like they will be made "redundant" soon?

There are a lot of complaints about Amazon's labor practices, but it strikes me watching that video, that those complaints are soon to end. Because there will be no labor at Amazon warehouses.

(clarification: the complaints are always about how fast pickers have to work and the tight metrics they're on, but that video makes it look like the little Roombas are doing the fetching at that facility and the pickers merely grabbing off the shelf as it's brought to them... wasn't 100% clear though).

>the little Roombas are doing the fetching

I'm convinced Amazon bought Zappos in 2009 just to get the warehouse bot tech.

Abandon hope all ye who enter here....

This is diabolical. Not the hardware, the  FreeTime ecosystem.

The Fire HD Kids Edition starts in Amazon FreeTime, which is built from the ground up just for kids. Amazon FreeTime allows you to choose content you’ve purchased to create a personalized experience for each of your children, giving you control over what content each child can access. Kids can seamlessly switch between books, videos, and apps in a simple, fun, and safe environment designed specifically for them. Amazon FreeTime also lets you set daily time limits and educational goals for your child.

Amazon FreeTime:

Blocks access to browsing and purchasing Amazon content
Blocks in-app purchases
Disables location-based services
Disables social sharing (Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads)

You can choose specific books, videos, and apps for your child to see in Amazon FreeTime from your library or when you purchase new content from Amazon. Prime Instant Video and video rentals cannot be added to your child’s library in Amazon FreeTime. You can select whatever content you feel appropriate, and change your selections at any time. Content that you share in FreeTime will function just like it would normally on your Fire tablet, except that the protections listed above will limit functionality for some apps. Ads are not blocked in ad-supported apps that you share in FreeTime, but children cannot open them.
