Seeing a crapload of Fire Tablet "recommended buy" articles in my feeds.  Then again, AMZ has discounted the basic Fire 7 to $35 for Prime, which is ridiculously cheap.

Loss leader to get people to sign up for Prime?

Some of that, I'd say. BUT there's also been an ongoing clearance sale of Echo devices. I think they're clearing out old inventory for a new generation of echo-enabled products.  A new Fire TV with built-in Alexa was announced recently.

How are these for general browsing?

>browsing

These are Amz's version of android. On the older models, it's not too hard to put G Play on the tablet without rooting it. Then you can put Chrome on there. The 7" models I have are slightly weak on processing power, so I'd expect them to be sluggish.  I'm thinking these new models will be OK -not blazing- but OK.

But for $165 for the no-ad version, you're not risking much.

The intertubes are going nuts over this. I'm going to have to filter my feeds.

I just got a 2017 Fire 8inch 32 GB tablet in my hands.  At $110 it's a very good buy.

As is it's a great media and social reader.  The browser is based on Chrome and works well.

I think there are better tablets for business and college BUT if money is real right buy a Fire and put the Google Play store on it and you are good to go.

I just read a good review of the Fire 10 vs Ipad 9.7 but can't locate it again.  It came to the same conclusion as this review (TL;DR You can't beat it for $150 but you can't be too picky)

https://www.digitaltrends.com/tablet-reviews/amazon-fire-hd-10-2017-review/

Wait! Found it.

>you can't be too picky

Based on the picky part, I bought Louise another Ipad yesterday for $370 (incl smart cover) at an Apple store. Once you get used to instant-on, or have apps you use every day, $200 is the upcharge of keeping same-old same-old.

I reckon the fire series would be a lot more useful if you could get youtube kids without having to sideload it. They're such good value as kids devices, but youtube kids seems a bit of a must.

If you can get YouTube kids from Google play then you are in business. Here is how to load Google play on Fire tablets.
