Filtering/Fielding 'Interested in buying your domain' inquiries
« on: February 24, 2017, 02:02:56 PM »
Over the years, I've had a crapload of spammy emails spawned by whois. 99% were worthless. How to cut to the chase?

After 'The Lynsky,' probably the 2nd-best skill I picked up during my stint with Burroughs/Unisys was from the Sales Training school.

Silence is an especially valuable tool when selling, for pretty much the same reason. Clients are uncomfortable with the quiet and want to fill the air.

We always said, "Whoever talks first loses" but it isn't quite as simple as that. People will tell you things (if you just shut up!) when given the chance. Silence is the best way to handle it. https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2009/03/uses-of-silence-2/9766/

Recent inquiry:

I am interested in your web domain, countryguide.com. I found your email by looking up the domain's whois record. I would like to enquire if you intend to keep the domain or if you would be willing to part with it?.

Please contact me if you have any interest in selling your domain.

Excellent, that was my intent.

Over the years, I have found that the simplest way to cut to the chase on the sale of my content websites or unpopulated domains is to have you make a single offer.  I'll reply yes or no. If yes, we'll proceed through escrow.com

That's a great reply. I've got a less effective similar approach, but still struggle to get past "yeah, but how much do you want" sometimes.

I like the whois email idea too

When someone asks you for something they must have, a report or similar. Ask them for the headings or some simple task. Quite often then never return.

RC will explain with more elegance :-)

Welcome, grehlone.  It's posted elsewhere but, since it's my post, I'll post it again here.

No kidding, this is absolutely, without-a-doubt, the best piece of people management advice I was ever given.  It has saved me untold amounts of time and agony. Best of all, you come out being the good guy.

I've named the tactic "The Lynsky" after P. Lynsky who was my regional manager for Burroughs back when I sold computer mainframes door-to-door.

I was doing great in sales (200% quota YTD) and Lynsky started mentoring me directly, rather than working through the local zone manager.  He  knew that I was getting bogged down in installations. Hell, things would be so much faster if I could just drop off the computer and wave goodbye. Lynsky, of course, just wanted me back out selling.  But salesmen were responsible for the installation and training, even some of the coding. The problem wasn't so much the basic hardware and programs, mostly it was in all the custom reports that the client wanted/needed once we got it past the initial install and they could see what else the package needed.  I was coding a crapload of extra reports to make the customer happy and it was sucking up my time.

So Lynsky calls me into his office: "Just give them something to do FIRST, just a little something,  anything. It doesn't have to be hard to do or beyond their capabilities. Then have them call you to do the next step once they've finished their task."

Since reports were what was killing me, I started asking for the client to just lay out the column headers.  Nothing fancy, just take a scrap piece of greenbar and rule off some columns and pencil in a header.  All of a sudden, the need for these reports which the client HAD-TO-HAVE RIGHT AWAY or he'd go out of business tomorrow dried up.

I just stole this script. The "broker" came back with a long email about how she is working on commission and it is in both our interests to get the highest value so her client insists on a certified appraisal. Imagine my luck when it turns out that she knows of a business that offers just such a service!

I should have just spammed her message, but I was perturbed so I replied

Did you read my last email?

You will make me an offer. I will accept or reject. The only communication you need to send me is a number. Any other communication will be ignored

This is a great thread. Learned some new techniques. One that I have used which is similar is that I don't like the game of going back and forth. I have a price in mind, if your offer is at or above my number, I will accept, otherwise, I will reject and no more offers will be considered. Almost every time (when they do respond) the offer comes in much higher than I expected.
