Baby Boomers look at ads on the side of websites. Millennials do not.

Huge. wow, thanks.

First off, I would never have guessed that people would look at the hot model in the bikini rather than the bottle of cleaning product. People are weird.

Second, "People like looking at female celebrities more than male celebrities." This confirms a long-standing suspicion. I've often told women that a rarely-mentioned perk of being a man that women are all looking at women ("what a cute outfit!" "I love that eye shadow!") and men are looking at women ("nice butt!"). That means that if you are a man with little interest in your appearance, it's fine. Nobody's looking at you anyway! And since I'm the kind of person who puts my clothes from the previous day on as long as they don't smell funny or have noticeable dirt patches...

The one about boomers vs millennials is perplexing though. Is it ad blindness in general, or is it something particular about sidebar ads?

>sidebar

For me, it's learned 'column blindness.' Site after site has taught me that -other than nav- sidebars are low-level fud.

Ah... I think I see an explanation

We Boomers spent a decade and a half using websites with sidebar nav, but that has become decreasingly common. So those who are younger and have spent more of their time with more responsive-friendly navigation (which tends not to be sidebars) don't associate sidebars with navigation as much as we do... perhaps

I think there's mileage in that. Search engines are probably better than what they used to be, sites are generally better structured and there's more information out there to satisfy user queries. Maybe in the past we had to click around a bit whereas today you punch in a query and G tends to have the right page and content in front of you, no nav needed.

Added... older folks may consider the source a bit more, and have a quick 'check' of what/who the site is. Nowadays though, a lot of my own answers from G tend to come from homogenised sites like stack overflow, wiki, where I already know the layout.

Those I know tend to read the web as if were a newspaper.
