I've found myself in an unusual situation : Working on a project that generates genuinely interesting news topics.
The client is a charity, so the budget isn't great, and I want to make the most of the press releases. I usually opt of PRWeb, but at their prices I will be killing the budget pretty quickly.
Can anyone recommend a distribution service that doesn't cost the earth, but it likely to generate some links/traffic/journo interest ?

JasonD started a thread with a whole list of PR release sites.
Here it is:

Sadly I am but a lowly scrote who doesn't have access to such areas. Anything from there that could be shared with the unwashed masses?
-
heh. and here we hit the snag!
I'll ping you some likely ones Rooftop. Zero budget charity based? Is it local to you or UK/worldwide?
-
Gurtie comes charging to my rescue again. I'll try not to feel demasculated.
You probably know who I am talking about anyway. Not totally without budget it is just that every penny has to be justified. Stuff we are pushing out this week is really of more local appeal - say to county boundaries, although generally they are looking wider.
-
oops, sorry, I was completely unaware... :-[

I would have to think if it is a true charity/non-profit, those PR companies would lower their distribution fee(?) Maybe you could negotiate one? If it's genuine, I can't see (too many of) them not cut you some sort of break(?)

>not liking 2 stage forums
...thank God this one has more than that:)
-
and do you remember my point about not liking 2 stage forums....
either all in or all out.
Gurtie, did you send RT the URL ?
no, thats yours to share :) I sent him some likely sites.

Who's the level 1 end boss?

It's funny how often those emails go missing! I've asked a couple of the bigger players about free/discounted but not yet got a response. It's certainly a genuine charity - registered as such and with a Royal as patron. However it's not the sort of sick children/injured puppies sort of thing that immediately gets people bending over backwards to help. I've even offered to injure a couple of puppies... apparently that isn't helpful.
Thanks all. Gurtie (esp Gurtie) has sorted me out - definitely got enough to keep me busy for now.

Brilliant stuff - thanks all. Much more there than I was expecting. Does mean I have some work to do now though :-\

>I've asked a couple of the bigger players
Personally, I'd ride this as hard as possible. But do a little research and find the companies that cater to it... I think you'd be surprised. But if it's a charity, don't push too far, just work the open channels. They are there.

Jason,
So that you can add to your spreadsheet - #48 ThomasNet News only accepts new products. When they get the press release a blurb (taking out all the marketing speak) is created by a Engineering type writer. They also take all photos/graphics etc. They also have shedloads of longtail visitors and a really good pagerank
ThomasNet News is my sweet little baby.

Surely the key is to get onto Google News, so I don't ehtirely see the point in spending hours manually submitting your post/article to dozens of PR sites. I just use one site - PRFire.co.uk. As long as you don't go for any of their SEO or image services, it's free. Gets me onto Google News probably 70% of the time.

Oh really? Cheers, Doug. Do you mean submit the same press release at each PR site...or do one press release at one site and a separate topic press release at another site?
PRfire:):) Sam will like you
Yeh, I guess he will :-) Although as I have absolutely no affiliation with them, I'll balance my previous praise by saying their link-building prices are waaaay overpriced :-)

Updated version - I've added the additional sites people have mentioned so far on various threads and it should be editable by anyone
