Adsense coverage ratios
« on: October 05, 2012, 09:22:48 AM »
If the Adsense coverage ratios for a site are pretty poor have any folks found a good alternative to use in place of showing those pesky public service ads/blank space. Obviously, things will be niche dependent to an extent but generally speaking do you use CPM deals to fill in or specific affiliate image links for instance? Any insight would be great.

I know some people have had success with things like eBay and Chitika ad modules as a replacement for AdSense. Chitika will even do contextual ads for you, I think, although you have to be careful not to place those with AdSense of course

You should be able to opt-out of the public service ads.

Also, these days Adsense seems more focused on personal targeting that niche targeting - it's long been a sore point of mine that my finance sites are as likely to show dating or slimming ads rather than finance links, though you can block certain categories of ads.

If you're seeing blank spaces, though, I would presume either you've only just put up the ads, or else you may be blocking them somehow?

I think its more a case of lack of ad inventory (in that specific sector) more than anything that's possibly causing low coverage rates. Strange as coverage was always good and it's dropped massively recently (no changes at our end).

You can also try kontera/intellilinks, but the money is in finding a suitable affiliate offer/program.

I've started using OpenX to serve a mix of AdSense, affiliate banners, and ads from the OpenX networks.

So far so good. It took some work to get the channels set up that I wanted, but now that it's up and running it has been trouble-free (about five months now).

I read a few complaints about ads loading slowly, so I put the OpenX code snippets into sized divs on the theory that the browser could load the rest of the page around it if ads were slow to come in.

One of the biggest things I like about it is the geotargeting. I can run my own banners targeted to certain countries, and AdSense everywhere else. In effect, AdSense is my universal default, then I can add advertiser or affiliate banners where suitable.

Another thing I like is that the OpenX code conceals AdSense IDs and affiliate codes.

Good point.

I'm using DFP by Google and it works ok, but the banners are slow and the whole booking process is a pita. Will look into OpenX again. thanks.

Exactly the same DFP complaints as Rumbas from me.

One thing to be said for DFP though is that if you use adsense for infill and manage the non adsense inventory well it can help drive up CPC pretty well in a way that a non google solution wouldn't.  I'd like to take another look at openx, but our main use of dfp is to add competition in for adsense and drive up cpc.
