Australian Report on Adtech and Google
« on: February 09, 2021, 01:54:24 PM »
Here is a good Twitter thread summarizing the 222 page interim report.  It's not the final report but most of this can be expected to survive.

This problem for Google is not going to go away.

That looks encouraging. There seems to be growing recognition both in government and in industry (i.e. Apple) that tracking and targeting has gone too far in general and when you couple that with the phenomenal reach of Google, it poses major problems.

Can we hope that we have already hit a low point in the aggressive targeting and tracking of people across their online activities and things are likely to improve from here? Or will Google and others just shift the nature of their ads and tracking scripts? Or will they do like Facebook and try to force users to accept it and mostly succeed now that they have them addicted to their ecosystem?
