"Google will also start placing ads with a gallery of up to eight images in search results, potentially increasing ad supply further."

This reminds me of when a newspaper puts ads on the front page. Only The Onion ever did it well. At the time, they boldly announced that they were the only paper in America to dare to put ads on the front page... as well as claiming to be America's Finest News Source(tm).

But it raises the question - what is the threshold annoyance for users? Have users been trained to accept that they should see the maximum number of ads at all times?

As Seth Godin likes to say: "The problem with the race to the bottom, is you just  might win. Or even worse, come in second."

I know it seems quaint to predict the end of civilization. I am predicting that it ended in 1986, but future historians may see this quote as proof that by 2019, people had finally figured it out

Quote
The company wants to make it easier for users to discover and buy new products because they shop in brief spurts while watching TV or sitting in the bathroom

The phrase "garbage in, garbage out" comes to mind with that quote :-)

Th3core, 2013: Google breaks promise - banner ad experiment
http://th3core.com/talk/traffic/google-breaks-promise-banner-ad-experiment/msg29249/#msg29249

"The possibility exists in 2013 that the absolute revenues of the major players will decline as desktop revenues suffer and mobile revenues fail to make up the difference, even as they grow dramatically. This nightmare scenario is key to understanding what is driving bad behavior by marketers and product leaders."

"In the absence of long-term thinking, all streams will eventually turn into marketing-infested flows."

We are witnessing Google transform itself into a portly, middle aged used car salesman wearing a loud plaid double-knit sport coat.

I think they are looking for revenue sources to replace the loss of tracking data they currently sell.  The EU & California privacy movements are getting traction *AND* they are now pretty much cast as evil in the US Congress, so they can't depend on their lobbyists to keep the legal skids greased.

I was wondering why they needed this rev boost with everyone sitting at home/online this year.

Ads on YouTube every 3 minutes, they must be hard up.

No kidding and I think they have boosted these up a notch in the last week or so.  (If I see one more Mandalorian I'm gonna drop kick Baby Yoda's green a-- into the street.)

I haven't had time to test this but there might be fewer adds late at night.
