I've read a number of Jon Ronson books covering some interesting encounters with Mr Icke.

TBH I didn't realise he was still alive.

IIRC, he gets some coverage in "The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry" and "Out of the Ordinary: True Tales of Everyday Craziness" and/or possibly "Them: Adventures with Extremists".

The titles alone may give a flavour.

Seems like a reaction to all the publishers who default nofollow their editorially granted links, which nofollows I imagined Google would be ignoring anyway. 

Perhaps they felt they couldn't ignore those nofollows without updating their stated interpretations of nofollow and allowing other nuanced use cases.

The general SEO toolkit plugins...

Canonical <- tells you if the canonical of the page is different to the address bar URL
NoFollow <- meta robots alerts for noindex or nofollow
Redirect Path <- handy glance at redirections including status (HTTP, javascript, etc.) and URLs
Chrome UA spoofer <- you'll all know what this does
Web Developer <- classic tool bar in icon form
Structured Data Testing Tool <- check schema or send it to Google to test


Other stuff

Autofill <- handy for saving value for repeat entries into form fields that the browser wouldn't otherwise store

I take the point on Youtube, which perhaps is a special case.  Not thoroughly thought through on my part, but I think we could categorise the major online media platforms by intent:


"Find me what I want now":  web search (i.e. Google)

"Help me learn/do something": web search (google) or video platform (youtube)

"Entertain me":  youtube, netflix

"Just browsing":  facebook, instagram, medium, Google Discover


Whereas in the past "entertain me" and "just browsing" could have been poorly served by Google / web search or better served by broadcast and print media, there are easier to access / better online channels now available in your pocket.

These present opportunity to the digitally savvy marketers (such as but not limited to SEOs), but the point of conversion intent "find me what I want now" is still firmly the SEOs domain.

Like all other supporting marketing, you can increase the effectiveness of the point of conversion stuff by having a presence elsewhere to build brand salience, but its an accelerant not a replacement in most cases (that I can relate to at least).

Don't get me wrong, Chris' article really has made me think twice about content production and distribution across channels, but I'm not on the dead website bus yet.

Definitely an interesting read.

Didn't notice any recognition of the commercial intent of a Google searcher (or Yellow Pages reader for that matter) versus a social platform reader, which is the reason SEO/Search is alive and well and not going anywhere for the time being.

But some compelling points made well none the less.

Amz doesn't have a recommendation engine.

Some irony in that seeing as they pretty much invented the recommendation engine for ecommerce.

It was 50/50 on the blunt in/out question, but that has proven to have been too simple a question to provide a mandate for anyone to successfully action anything.

Time to construct a more meaningful framework for deciding WTF happens next.

Dark times ahead.  The country is massively divided.  There needs to be a long term constructive plan in the interest of the majority, but there seems to be little attempt to drive towards this by the extremists.

scary how often things like this seem to happen.

"Sorry - we accidentally removed your site from our index entirely because we thought [X] but we were wrong"

Its hard to think of Google as just a tech company with some automated processes and human beings that get things wrong just as much as any other company.  Given their scale, there must be vast numbers of these incidents every day.
