scary how often things like this seem to happen.

"Sorry - we accidentally removed your site from our index entirely because we thought [X] but we were wrong"

Its hard to think of Google as just a tech company with some automated processes and human beings that get things wrong just as much as any other company.  Given their scale, there must be vast numbers of these incidents every day.

Web Development / Re: Terchnical SEO : You Should Read

I have to say that I though I could have an application/ld+json schema block inside the closing body tag, so I've learned something.

It might be a specific bug related to the case.  Best practice is stick it in head of course, but I have ld+json working fine within the <body> on one template, delivering 2 objectives.  Admittedly the script is not immediately before the closing </body> tag and sits within the middle of the body.

I wonder whether there was something to do with the other onpage scripts that was causing the problem.  I've come across something similar to the hreflang case outlined in that article...

Interesting read.

Galloway says that Amazon’s new $15 hourly wage needs to be viewed through a much more cynical lens. “Jeff Bezos doesn’t do anything that’s not the smart thing to do,” he says. “When Amazon raises their wages so publicly, other people are forced to do so” — thus starving out the competition. It’s our new Cold War, he says, and Amazon won’t stop at retail. It will outspend every other entity in pursuit of global domination.

In the 1970s my mother worked in food production for TV commercials.  A few of them alongside a director called Ridley Scott (whose career went rapidly downhill after that bigtime exposure https://www.businessinsider.com/tv-ads-ridley-scott-made-before-he-directed-prometheus-and-alien-2012-6?IR=T).

Back then the tricks of the trade were slightly different...

pies baked full with cotton wool to make them puff out

cigarette smoke blown on food for that delicious hot fresh out of the oven look

Traffic / How I recorded user behaviour on my competitor’s websites

Here’s what I did:

User lands on my page (referrer: google)
When they hit “back” button in Chrome, JS sends them to my copy of SERP
Click on any competitor takes them to my mirror of competitor’s site (noindex)
Now I generate heatmaps, scrollmaps, records screen interactions and typing.

The UK is in the EU with opt-outs.
But the UK wants out of the EU with opt-ins.

That's the single best argument I've heard to date for Brexit

I wonder if there is something in the nature of the Airbnb product that leads to a greater number of visits per conversion.

For a flight - its typically a very easy, functional transaction (airline of choice or meta search)

For a hotel - a bit of bouncing between the OTA and tripadvisor, maybe having started at or used a meta search at some point

For Airbnb - a load of research on the properties available, locations, owner, reading the reviews, etc.  Message the owner, wait for response, negotiate a price, wait for a response, book it, revisit closer to travel time to get the details etc.

It keeps pulling you back in

Any sign of manual actions in Search Console?

Would have thought not showing for name is either some sort of penalty or Google to accepting the new site theme.

Any point during the sites previous life where you can see traffic disappearing in Searchmetrics or the like?
