Really nice... but I do not enjoy having to hunt for pricing.

Hardware & Technology / Re: Need new hosting. Recommendations?
« on: July 10, 2019, 07:31:04 AM »
I got the dreaded EOL notice from my host and I'll soon need to be moving about a dozen domains. So I'm looking around to see what's out there for cheaper hosting.

The traffic is low enough that I can't justify a big spend.

Any recommendations? What questions should I be asking?

Knownhost?

Long story short:

Error
Contact form stopped sending one day to the other.

Testing
WP mail gave no error
php mail() was sending no prob.

Error source found
After a few hours of chase, I found that some system process had set permissions on class-phpmailer.php to absolute zero.

Set rights back - all good.

What a night.

Problem with video is that I don't know if the info I need will be in there wihtout watching it all.

I can skim a text and immediately see if stuff like features, prerequisites, etc.. is covered.

As the meme goes... why not both?
Transcription services are dirt cheap nowadays.

I hate this sh##.

I read damn fast, and sometimes you NEED text.

Case in point: Software evaluation.

Find a software you want to use for task X in your company, to the tune of $$$$$$ a year.

And every stinking developer thinks I Want to sit through half an hour video presentation instead of getting a bullet list of features?

Water Cooler / Re: The Tyranny of Convenience

Apple built its empire on "It Just Works" but lately, it doesn't.

I cracked an iphone screen this week. It was a 3-day process to fix with hours of wasted time.

And the hardware...

I was never an Apple fan (except for the iPad.. that thing is sweeeet).
But boy have they lost their way.

For info: That is about 20% of it's workforce.

Although, they might just be outsourcing it / getting business consultants instead.
This will allow them to adjust to needs more quickly. (yes, I know that is theory, but I have seen several banks do this).

Traffic / Re: Reddit grows a pair

While I applaud the move on reddit's part, I can only wonder why it took them so long.

There have been threats and calls to violence on that sub way before.

Web Development / Re: Websites are Dead
« on: July 05, 2019, 09:04:55 PM »
I think that websites might not dead, but they are becoming only one part of a marketing mix, instead of THE thing.

Reddit - one of the biggest websites is used through apps when on the phone.

If you have a podcast, odds are that almost no one is loking at your site.

etc..

Don't bury the website, but be aware that it is not the end all anymore.
