We had a pretty good view around here. Saw a pretty decent light show at our house but some friends posted pics from a bit further away from the city with less light pollution and the colors were amazing.

I have been looking more and more to reddit for people's opinions on different products. We were recently looking for a new sofa and couldn't find any helpful information on the furniture sites or searches for "best sectional sofa" or anything like that but I looked at Reddit for people's opinions of a couple different brands and found some very good info and first hand experience.

>>Are ANY niche sites from independent publishers gaining ground

Anecdotally I know a number of small publishers (myself included) who's sites have been hammered pretty hard by Google. Some are cooking related, some are product reviews, some are wedding themed, and some other niches as well. As far as I know none of these are AI content and are all written by real people with first hand knowledge of the products they are reviewing and talking about.

Like I should have learned at least a half a dozen times in the past I need to stop getting sucked into the trap of relying on Google for my traffic. Most of the small publishers I see having success at my day job are primarily generating their traffic from social channels now. Facebook, Twitter, IG, Youtube, etc.

"all over YouTube"

I have seen a number where instead of increasing speeds they change the vehicles. Kind of fun to watch but yeah, no idea how accurate any of it is.

Figured I would throw in here.

Since the beginning of the year I have been getting back into weight lifting at the gym. Been going 3 times a week consistently. I try to do squats and bench presses (or some variation of that) every time I go and then mix in a handful of other lifts (leg press, tricep work, curls, core stuff, pull downs, rows, etc.) and I have started deadlifts too.

My probably unachievable goal is the 1000 lb club (1000 combined squat, deadlift, and bench). I haven't tried any PRs yet but I have hit 205 on the squat with 5 reps, 135 on bench with 5 reps, and 215 deadlift with 5 reps. If I just did one rep I could probably hit 600 combined. 1000 pounds will be a pretty big stretch and not sure how long it will take to get there but it will be a pretty big milestone to hit. When I first started in January 135 lb squats were brutal and my bench was only 95 lbs so there has been some decent progress so far. Not sure if I can hit 800 by mid-summer but that is what I am shooting for.

And golf season is starting so I will get a lot of walking in there. I have tried using the cardio machines and have tried running in the past but I get bored with that really quick. But I could walk 10 miles on the golf course and still want to do more.

Put some cameras in the silos, make those remote control and kids (and a lot of adults) would go crazy for that.

>>I'm glad to hear that you and your team were spared

All in all it wasn't a big percentage of the employees. It is of course a significant number to those who were affected but in reality it is just a few handfuls of people here and there.

Just got word of a round of layoffs at my company today. My team and I were not affected thankfully. Don't think it was a huge number of people but I know a few people who are gone. Mostly due to some organizational restructures and some positions were a bit redundant.

>>fast food

With 4 kids in tow we still sometimes get sucked into fast food. Unless you purposely set out to go the absolute cheapest route like just the 12 pack of tacos at Taco Bell it is easy to push into the $60-$70 range to feed everyone. And this is just normal fast food like Wendy's or even McDonalds. I priced out a meal at Five Guys a couple days ago and it was over $20 for a burger, fries, and a drink.

Sit down restaurants are getting pretty crazy too. The price for a burger and fries is pushing over $20 at many places around here.

I  know my little site got hit pretty hard with the helpful content update back last September. Yeah, I have a ton of affiliate links in almost all my content but the product reviews and recommendations are nearly all based on personal experience and hands on use. But I am now being outranked by some of these big content publishers that just have very generic content and not somewhat in depth reviews. Pretty similar situation to what the author of that article is seeing.

>collapse of hanging out

I have noticed this with my kids. My oldest is in 6th grade now. When I was that old (1985) I pretty much hung out with friends every day. We would just go to each others houses after school and hang out for a couple hours before heading home, we would just show up at the playground on a Saturday and play football for hours, or we would just go to the park or abandon lot or whatever and make our own fun and trouble.

Now I don't know if kids ever just go to their friends houses to play. Most of the "play dates" I see now are more whole families meeting up at a park or at someone's house. Very few kids just going to hang out at their friends house. Probably a combo of kids just communicating in different ways so they don't have to be face to face, kids being too busy with extra-curriculars, parents being too busy, parental fear, and probably some Covid hangover in there as well.

Economics & Investing / Re: What Happens to the Stuff You Return?
« on: January 22, 2024, 05:23:07 PM »
I have a couple friends who buy pallets and pallets of returns from most of the big online retailers and big box stores. Then the just sell almost everything for $5 each in their shops. Occasionally I have seen them post that they needed a new fridge so they bought a couple trucks of returned fridges, picked one for themselves, and then sold the rest super cheap.

The $5 method seems pretty foolproof. If you know you are getting 100 items on the pallet and you know that 80 or 90% are going to be resellable for $5 you know just what you need to bid to remain profitable. Don't need to worry about trying to squeeze a bit more profit going through every product and figuring out if something can be $10 or $20 or whatever.

I know returns are huge at my day job. When I first started 10 years ago the returns would come in, someone would look through them and if the tags were still on and they hadn't been worn they were put back in inventory. Not really sure what happens with returns now. I know last year we did some big events at some stadiums around the country where we gave away over 300,000 items to low income families and charities. Even had a popular hip hop artist Lil' Baby write a song about it. I really liked that approach. Just because a shirt didn't fit me or someone pulled the tag off a hoodie before they realized it didn't fit doesn't mean someone somewhere couldn't use it. So we turned those 300,000 items (not sure what % that is of all our returns) into a ton of publicity, kept the stuff out of landfills, and helped people who couldn't normally afford new gear for their team.

We have been using Mint for the past year or so. Some things are a bit clunky but overall it has been helpful for us to be more disciplined with our budget. Like Ergo said, it is worth whatever privacy I have given away.
