Monetization / Do you buy content?
« on: November 17, 2013, 05:46:37 PM »
I have had the idea for a little content (initially written content) business floating around for a while.  I think I have spent more money on content than anything else over the years and I really want to offer something 'better'.

I'm going to try and take this from idea to first customer in a month.  I am not sure if I am going to take the route of matching writers with customers and taking a percentage, or manage everything myself, but the ultimate aim is to build something which runs without me, but is so firmly structured and procedural that the quality to the customer remains the highest I can possibly get it, and is the number one priority.

So if you buy, or have bought in the past, I have a few questions -

1. What do you hate most about buying content?

2. Have you found a supplier you are happy with?

3. Have you found one supplier who can deliver everything you need?

4. How much of a factor is price?

5. Do you usually look for quality or quantity?

6. Where do you look when you need to buy content?

Bonus question - Do you want to buy any content?  ;)

Thanks for your help on this.  I'd love to hear any feedback, positive or negative.

Water Cooler / Help! Ending a big contract with a single client. Yes/No?
« on: November 02, 2013, 06:02:33 PM »
Over the last few years I have found myself getting more and more work from a single client.  They clearly appreciate what I can do for them and they have had a decent internal structure to act as professional go-betweens.

This client however, has been making technology promises to its own clients (massive global brands) which it can't honor (think 10K budgets to make 500K projects work)

During the past four months all of their internal IT team and half of their external providers have resigned because of the pressure to stand up in front of clients and lie about what they can deliver.

I am now in the situation where I have let most of my other clients go to concentrate on this one. It is paying the bills.  I almost have that employee mentality where I am afraid to leave.

Pressures are building for me to help them promise the delivery of undeliverable projects and every part of me says 'end the contract now!'.  However, I do have my bills to pay, and I have sub-contractors relying on me to keep them fed with work. As you might have guessed this is the first really big money gig I have dealt with.

I have enough to keep myself afloat for six months.  I 'think' that a kick up the arse like this will make me work 24/7 to get my old money makers (and the new ones on the list) earning.

I guess what I want to know is, has anyone else been in this situation, and how did you manage it?  Were you scared of the 'leap of faith'?  Did your plans work out and if not what came about to replace them?

Water Cooler / Help! No internet for a week
« on: June 04, 2013, 06:23:40 PM »
After months of problems with my broadband (talktalk) and little help from their support team (I run the business from home, so it is a big deal), I decided to take the plunge and switch, well not only switch but get a back up cable line too.  So, I had it all nicely scheduled to happen tomorrow during my (rare) week off.

So, BT call me today and tell me they have a problem and didn't schedule the engineer, so have to re-schedule with a two week window.  Then, to top it off Virgin tell me that they can't get here until next Friday.

I have a garage full of bitcoin miners which are going to sit idle, but thankfully my mother-in-law has lent me her connection for the other work, if I want it.

I'm tempted to take it as a sign that I should be doing something else for the week.  The pub garden is calling, but that is not very productive.  - What productive non techie thing would you do if you were at home/work without a connection for the week?

Water Cooler / Pocket Knife / Penknife
« on: October 09, 2012, 05:07:48 PM »
Having not carried a pocket knife since I was a kid, I got talking to a friend a few weeks back who challenged me to borrow one and see just how much I used it for a few weeks.

Just to be clear, I have no interest in a knife as a weapon. I am British (what what) and don't feel the need (sorry db, I love ya  ;) )

I took up the challenge borrowing a basic Wenger Swiss Army knife (I had a Victorinox when I was a kid...it got stolen).  I didn't think I would use it at all, but I have, almost every day. As a Dad there seems to be endless times that you need a screwdriver, oh and bottle opener  ;)

Anyway, I have given it back now and with Christmas coming , I thought it would make a great gift for the family to get me.  I wondered if anyone else here had one, or a mult-itool, and what they thought of it?

Of course, it has to be UK legal, non-locking, under 3 inches blah blah (sorry db  ;) )

Talk about promote your product!  I wonder how many units they will shift by pushing just the one product on the home page?

They seem to have got the timing just right too.  No new iDevice at the moment, Windows tablets not due for a couple of months.

I am a happy original Kindle user (and early Amazon customer).  I won't buy a Fire because I really like eink screens for reading and don't want to watch films etc on a small screen. Has anyone seen one?  Is there any oportunity to make money there at all?

Hardware & Technology / Azure Mobile (free mobile cloud service hosting)
« on: August 30, 2012, 07:30:39 PM »
I have spent a few days looking at different ways to connect the new mobile apps I am working on to a webservice I want to build without spending out too much.  During that search Azure mobile was released.

In short, you can create up to 10 cloud services for free** which should be more than enough for me to find out if my ideas are going to workout.

Here is a video overview - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovDtALgsBuQ

Here is the post - http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/develop/mobile/tutorials/get-started/

They seen to be offering the '10 free' offer for site hosting too which may be of interest to some.

I am going to be having a play over the next week or so, so I'll report back on how it goes.

** - Edit: I think the 10 free is for a trial period only.  I'll check it out and update.

Would you be tempted to apply?

These little peppers are easy to grow and f***ing hot.  For the future of the planet, there must be a way to convert the energy they create in heat/? into power?

I love eating them, but they really have something that no other fruit/veg has.  I am going to do some research, so thought I'd start a thread.

If I could create a robot tongue to react to the SB then it might make something new?  mad?  no, just interested....I think.

Water Cooler / Internet access in Spain
« on: May 15, 2012, 07:10:48 PM »
I am off to Spain for a break.  While I should drop all connections, I have a client I can't let down and need to monitor things for an hour or so every couple of days.

Assuming there is no free wifi where I am, what is the best way to connect to my VPN?  Phone as a modem/3G dongle/??.  I have never really worked while out of the UK, so am a novice here.

Story here -

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17831725

On a personal note, I am removing most of the google services we use here.  The more my business grows the more I don't want to be tied in.  Ok, so the recent SERPs changes which removed a chunk of the income might have something to do with it.

Traffic / Ranking changes
« on: April 17, 2012, 04:47:47 PM »
I have not been keeping track of most of my site rankings in google due to other things going on, but I had a good look today and have noticed that the sites I have which are very simple and based around one keyword are doing really well.

On the flip side the ones I have put time and effort into which cover wider subjects (and are more useful) seem to have been on the slide.

It doesn't seem to be related to the type of linking I did on them either.

Has anyone else seen the same and if so, is now the time to start banging out simple sites again?

Hardware & Technology / Adventures in App Development
« on: March 14, 2012, 10:55:22 PM »
Today I submitted a simple app (project 1, very simple app for learning purposes) to the Windows Phone Marketplace.  I am now porting it over to Android, so that I can compare the two when it comes to earnings, downloads, ease of use etc.  I will probably do the same for the iPhone (if I can lay my hands on a mac at a decent second hand price).

I just wanted to start a thread so that I can update you all with the results as I go along, as well as see how the balance of power shifts as time goes by.

I am going to start on Project 2 once I have done this initial learning-trial.  So, if there is anything you would like me to report on, please let me know.

Hardware & Technology / Phone apps
« on: February 22, 2012, 05:56:59 PM »
Does anyone here develop/sell smartphone apps?

I have been messing with both Android and Windows Phone development (much prefer developing for Win phone at the moment) and want to put a basic app or two out there.  So with that in mind I am looking to market in the right way.

Free with ads, paid or both?  What is the best way to make your app stand out from the crowd.  Anything really which will help me to get a good start.
