Traffic / Friends re-Reunited
« on: March 20, 2012, 02:06:24 PM »
"Friends Reunited has signed agreements with the Press Association and photographic archive company Francis Frith, which allows users access to 350,000 images which may be relevant to key moments in their lives."
Puts users in control of privacy.

Will it work?

I knew they kept a lot of information but was a little surprised at just how much.

Try this. Type “church,” “Old Testament” or even “friend” into Google, and the Web site of the LDS church, the Mormons, pops up near the top of the list.

In the age of the Internet, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has found a way to dominate what is arguably today’s most important information source: the search engine.

Water Cooler / John Malkovich: Back to basics
« on: August 07, 2011, 09:48:14 AM »
I was sitting at one of the pop-up venues (Pleasance courtyard) at the Edinburgh Festival on Friday night having one of my first evenings out for a couple of years.  Up to our table comes this bald guy handing out leaflets (at this time of year, the vast majority of the people in Edinburgh's centre become a storage place for leaflets being handed out).  I didn't take much notice, but thought I recognised the face and that's not unusual at Festival time either.  Anyway watching TV last night and Conair was on.  The face dinged - John Malkovich was handing out leafletting his own show.

Also on Friday night I saw Trudy Tyler (Sting's missus) and Simon Callow (4 Weddings +Funeral et al).

Nice to see a hollywood dude actually getting back to basics.

A friend registered a domain online and got this email in reply...

Water Cooler / Kids & Computers
« on: July 02, 2011, 09:30:46 AM »
My 5 year-old has just finished primary 1 (Grade1).

Her reading is very good and she is navigating her websites fairly well.

I am beginning to think that she is ready for a netbook so that she doesn't keep bothering me.

Is anyone going through the same or has gone through the same?

Am I being a twat?

This afternoon this came out of stealth:

At Blue Jeans Network, we’ve built a cloud-based video conferencing service that makes it easy to host high quality video meetings connecting many participants, using many different devices, supporting many combinations of video conferencing endpoints (e.g. Cisco, Lifesize, Polycom, Skype, Google Talk, etc.)

I am sure this will be handy for some people here.

bluejeans.com - 30 day free trial but no prices up yet that I can see.

"Earlier this month, Apple applied to patent a system that could switch off a smartphone's camera if it senses the user is trying to record a live event."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/13814378

Apple, it seems, are trying to become as controlling as Herr Hitler.

I am sure my comment will p##s someone off - apologies in advance.  Surprisingly, back in the 90's I was an evangelist for Apple until they released a machine where the basic spec didn't even run the then current browser (Netscape 4 if I remember correctly).

Google have announced Instant pages. http://techcrunch.com/2011/06/14/google-announces-instant-pages-instant-image-search-and-instant-availability-in-32-languages/

If you just want to look at the video which explains it is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Jn93FDx9oI&feature=player_embedded

They preload the first result "if they think it is what you will click on" - they don't mention whether they will do that if it is a places result that comes first in the search.  I can see this having been useful in 1994 on the 14.4 modem.

I have just come across this colour laser printer for £118.80 with free next day delivery.  The killer is that it has Lexmark Extra High Yield Toner Cartridges (6K black, 4K colour) included.  Seems like a great deal to me.
