Thanks Jason. As ever, your knowledge of these things is hugely impressive. I think that's 23 bottles of wine I now owe you?  :P

Marketing / Terms and conditions boxes - opt out ok?
« on: April 01, 2014, 02:25:23 PM »
I was under the impression that T&C's/marketing boxes that users tick and you can then get access to their data had to be opt-in (i.e. they have to tick them to proceed), but someone mentioned to me today that they don't have to be and can be pre-ticked. Is this the case?

Saw this online but not much since 2013:

http://www.out-law.com/en/articles/2013/january/consent-from-pre-ticked-boxes-should-generally-not-be-valid-under-new-eu-data-protection-regime-says-mep/

Anyone know if T&C/marketing boxes have to be opt-in to tick in the UK?

Web Development / Th3core on mobile phones

Are there any plans to mobilise th3core? Tough to read and go through threads here on smartphones (I'll add writing messages to that list as am doing this from my Galaxy and it's scrolling sideways forever!).Happy to donate to the cost of it and maybe this thread others could pledge donations if it's something they also want? Hardware & Technology / Re: G just bought Nest

Read about Nest in the Economist last year and thought to myself, "Yep, there's a winner":

You have to give credit to Google. They are ahead of the curve in pretty much everything. Problem is they're going to end up as some kind of AI God.

Great publicity for Amazon, but will it happen? Hmmm, not sure.

Regulation is one big hurdle it will have to overcome, but who wants to see zillions of drones buzzing around the sky all day long? I think the aesthetic may kill the idea.

Young people (of which I don't really count myself).

The get up and go outside aspect is one of its strengths. Plays into the fitness/live well sphere.

You also get a lot of people in their faction meeting up, so has a huge social element which I'm sure could include making new friends, dating etc.

Personally, I wouldn't bet against anything that Google are starting to push this much.

Traffic / Ingress, the augmented reality game by Google
« on: November 08, 2013, 10:59:29 AM »
I stumbled across a game called Ingress the other day on Google Play. Turns out it's very interesting on many levels.

First, to my knowledge it's the first augmented reality game for mobile phones. Not just real-time but real-space.

Second, it's run by Google.

Third, Google are now starting to market it after a year in beta. They're bundling promo stuff about it with new Android phones.

Fourth, given there are already a good number of people playing it (in Bristol, UK, where I live the main areas around town are live battlegrounds) you can bet your bottom dollar Google will start trying to make advertising money from it at some point.

Fifth, until they start making advertising money from it there are opportunities to get free marketing for your local business by setting up a portal next to your premises.

PS It's also a very addictive game. I feel like James Bond sneaking around hacking into portals.

Water Cooler / Re: Public Speaking Course @ Coursera
« on: June 23, 2013, 03:59:34 PM »
There are no secrets to becoming a great public speaker other than you must:

1. Practise public speaking.
2. Get expert feedback about your public speaking.
3. Incorporate that feedback into future public speaking.

İMe

 ;D

I would say you will gain very little from a public speaking course on the internet about how to speak in public. You will gain 1,000x times more from joining something like Toastmasters International. Dirt cheap and they have chapters all over the UK. Prepare to sh*t your pants every meeting...but that's the point  :)

Any support ticketing systems that you can buy off the shelf that people recommend?

Cheers,

Water Cooler / Re: 2033 according to Eric Schmidt
« on: May 23, 2013, 04:18:57 PM »
Totally agree about the employment issue. Will define the next generation. Al Gore goes into some detail about it in his new book The Future. Definitely worth a read.

I'd be surprised if most of the stuff in the article didn't happen by 2033. The only things that seem to me in the realms of science fiction by 2033 are memory and social prosthetics. Give it another 20 years from then though and they'll probably be achievable. After all, they've already successfully tested memory prosthetics on rats.

In terms of humans leading a predominantly machine controlled life by 2033, and without wanting to offend anyone of religious persuasion (which is not my intention at all), I've thought for some time that the machine intelligence as described in the article will be the first time a God (AI) will exist that there will be evidence for. An all-knowing, unseen God, that controls our lives.

The objects that are printed are 3D, but because the objects change shape according to outside stimuli you are presumably adding another dimension making it 4D. That's my guess anyway. A bit like space-time being the fourth dimension in the universe. That or 4D printing is just a cool name made up by some marketing bod. If so, it worked on me!

Great article. Be very interesting to see if Google do buy WhatsApp. Still can't believe Facebook are so average/poor on mobile. Asking for trouble.
