There is a big difference in the chatter surrounding DDG to that which was around Google before it went mainstream: Who is chattering.

(haven't read the article or every post yet)

The big difference too is how bad search was when G first came out, it was so light years ahead of the competition it didn't take too long to make the switch.  I think the only advantage DDG has at this point is the do not track thing.  Until that fear hits the mainstream, I am not sure DDG can get the traction until they become "enough better" than Google to get a larger market to switch.

I think the bigger G competitors come from an Apple or Facebook closed platform teaming up a Bing, Blekko, or buying out DDG and integrating.  You may have seen the rumor that MS pitched Bing to FB not too long ago.

Web Development / Re: Spidering tools

I've used 80legs.com on a list of 10 websites to analyze outbound link patterns.  I did have to hand the resulting data off to the Excel ninja to make use of the results but it was pretty cool.  Those desktop apps might be easier to use for a single site though.

I honestly didn't do anything but show up. :)  I remember Epcot being a huge bust (my fault, but wasn't it fun walking around in the rain?)  FWIW, if you haven't looked yet, I've always found Trip Advisor to be a pretty good tool for finding the type of lodging I am looking for:  http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g1954828-Disney_World_Florida-Hotels.html

I remember really enjoying Universal Studios - that Spider Man ride was a blast.

Links that appear quickly and then are removed after a short period of time (moderated) are a huge spam signal

I take "over optimization" as a vague umbrella term that gives them cover to hit whatever they want.  Check out this Cutts comment:

We are trying to make GoogleBot smarter, make our relevance better, and we are also looking for those who abuse it, like too many keywords on a page, or exchange way too many links or go well beyond what you normally expect.

Its the "beyond what you'd normally expect" phrase that is a big red flag, purposely vague.

Although I do believe in the FUD factor at play, their aggressive maneuvers at splog networks show they are serious.  I didn't think they would get all of BMRs network, wrong on that one.

Monetization / Re: Going from Affiliate to Retail
« on: December 29, 2011, 11:28:07 PM »
I went to retail/distribution for awhile than back to affiliate. Became too much of a pain to manage.  I think affiliate is still very doable if you can mask yourself a bit and be perceived as adding value.  Just depends on you I guess.

A couple senators just recommended a formal FTC investigation into this.  Let's hope it goes somewhere.

Do you have the ability to ban the user?  I do on our account and ban link droppers all the time.

It's gone already Drastic.

Maybe not a bad idea to throw up sites you want to get rid of in the Trading Post here.  One man's garbage is another man's gold :)
