So they are going to profile our sites and decide for us who can enter.  Riiiight.  Not happy.
Only if you add it to your site.
In fact even if you add it to your site they still leave the decision on what to do with that information to the site owner. That's the whole point of V3.

Now is the time for somebody to launch an alternative to reCaptcha.
Plenty around. Theirs wasn't the first and there are other options.

Traffic / Rand on the future of Google SERPs
« on: November 05, 2018, 01:24:39 PM »
I thought this talk was pretty interesting.  Includes a shout out to one of our own too
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFFdMQq6TkI

It isn't exactly a new topic, but I thought Rand made the point well and took a pragmatic approach to it rather than the more usual screams of "the sky is falling". Worth a watch.

OSM doesn't have teh whole javascript API, it's more about the map data.  Mapbox.com is a commercial, but not badly priced googlemaps alternative.

Yeah, it would be fun to see browser wars again.

Fun is a strong word

Marketing / Re: AMZ Prime Day is getting more press that Black Friday

Few ads this side of the Atlantic, and some crap news items trying to cash in on the search terms. Not much though.  I assume it's less disappointing in the US. Despite having a highly developed Amazon addition, I can't get excited about Prime Day.

Thought this was interesting. (and bit just for the nostalgia of digg!)

Hardware & Technology / Itty bitty : webpages encoded in a URL
« on: July 06, 2018, 10:06:59 PM »
Surprised this hasn't been posted: click here . That page explains it. It also doesn't exist anywhere - the page is encoded entirely in its URL.

No idea how I'd use it, but damn clever

Rooftop - did you ever find a solution that worked for you friend?

In case it got lost in all the shuffle, I'm quite sure Gargoyle will do what he wants (not as convenient as the service you envision, but it would get the job done nicely)

Typical friend request.  Laid out a few options, including a few instructions for her router.  Never even got a response!
Might teach her kids about proxies in return!

https://meetcircle.com/ seems like a decent solution. I haven't dug deep into it but it looks like there are a lot of options around setting time limits for different apps, filtering, tracking usage, etc.

That actually looks like a decent solution, thanks.  I'll have a dig

Thankfully we don't need this ourselves yet. We had one long chat about acceptable use and the kids are so scared that I'll change the wifi password that they're sticking to the rule so far!

Traffic / Re: Rising stars OS-wise in your web-hits?
« on: June 27, 2018, 10:08:58 AM »
I see data from a number of mid-sized sites and the variance site to site is massive.  Two examples of sites with similar audience sizes (approx 5m pageviews/month from US):

Automotive site
41% Android
26% Windows
28% IOS
6% Macintosh
<1% Linux

Health/Home remedies
42% IOS
37% Android
15% Windows
5% Macintosh
1% ChromeOS

Similar unique patterns across much of our book.  Unfortunately we don't measure OS as an aggregate. Might be interesting to see that by GEO for a billion+ pageviews per month, but it isn't a valuable metric for us.

"FBI asking everyone to power cycle their routers"

... "to complete installation of their latest trojan"

A friend was asking how best to limit how much time one of their kids spends online (kid loves to fire up the tablet in the middle of the night).  I went through some options with them, but then go thinking about a smarter way to do it.  I'd be surprised if this doesn't exist, but I haven't found anything yet.

  • Subscription service that acts as DNS / filter. Managed through web interfact
  • Parent needs to change router DNS service to use
  • Any new device connecting needs to authorise (cookie set) with parent pin
  • Parent can then control access by device : hours per week, service times, blocked sites etc

It would have all the usual challenges that DNS isn't that hard to get around, but the per-device set-up seems more useful than what I've seen on offer (Just because I don't want my kids looking at midget porn, doesn't mean I'm giving it up, etc).  Also ISP specific offerings and those build into routers suck.

I'm actually not into filtering at all, but device level policies managed offsite seemed sensible. In my friends case they want to limit the kids devices to being usable 7am-7pm, but everyone keeps suggesting that they turn the router off overnight (no tv, no parent internet) or set it on each device using whatever system each uses.

We do some stuff with the API at detectlanguage.com .  It works well, although we have some issues with the sample size in our data (our issue, not theirs)

In recent years owning Apple devices has felt more and more like you are borrowing them from Apple.
Lots of activity drain battery in the background. Are they going to ban their users from using fitness apps, Facebook, messengers and everything else too?

I agree that most of the activity around Crypto currencies and mining is now a scam, but I still don't see how that is any of Apple's business. There are plenty of ill-advised things you can use a device for.

Great picture when you know the context of the powercuts !
