Apparently this is going to happen automatically, with people having to opt out in order to not be part of G's marketing machine.

Economics & Investing / Anybody pull their money out of the market
« on: October 08, 2013, 05:42:17 AM »
I did not, now I have the risk of pulling out now and losing the regain when the House starts acting sane again. On the flip side, keeping it all in and  risking some major pain when they don't.

I know some of us use Scrapebox on a regular basis.  I thought the guide did a decent job of over-viewing its features.

Hardware & Technology / FF23 forces single tab display: the work around
« on: August 09, 2013, 10:28:10 PM »
So I updated to FF23 and was unhappy that it now forces you to lose the real estate from displaying a single tab instead of just showing tabs when one has multiple open.  I guess this was the default before, but we were able to shut it off in preferences.   Apparently this was done to prepare folks for an up-coming redesign that will hold on to that space for some reason -- this doesn't leave me feeling very optimistic.

Anyway, here's a simple work-around:  https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/hide-tab-bar-with-one-tab/

Traffic / On how Google freshness is being exploited

I thought this was a very good article:

I am pretty public about no longer believing in Whitehat vs Blackhat SEO. If you’re doing anything to try and get more links to move up the Google rankings, you’re ‘manipulating’ the algorithm one way or the other. I’ve got to the point now where I’ve just accepted the state Google is in this year and started following the crowd for what works. Myself and my clients have sites on both sides of the fence (old with a ton of natural links and new with very few links) so how Google swings doesn’t make much difference to me at all.

Traffic / google merchant center

So, I know that G is pushing their PPC model in google shopping, but I've also read that people are still getting free clicks via it and thought I should take advantage of every free potential visitor I could.  Anybody here using it?  Are you getting unpaid referals?  Also, how long did it take them to review your items/urls?

At lease according to one guy who works for Google.  Honestly, after watching the video, it feels like the response was off the cuff and not necessarily based on anything concrete.

I don't know if it has a lot of practical utility, but it is interesting to pop in phrases and see how they trend over time.

Monetization / Jumping back into e-retail
« on: July 10, 2013, 02:59:30 AM »
Several months ago I was looking into getting into a service space, the more I looked into it the less appealing it seemed to me. I decided to do something simpler, where my business' reputation isn't dependant on others.

After a long period out (or mostly out) of ecommerce I'm going back in.  I was partially inspired by NFFC's diligent work on his own business and how he built it up into something quite amazing.  That, and I want something permanent, something with legs and a recurring customer base.

I'm going back to where I got started online, this stuff is light, small, portable, doesn't go bad and only goes up in value.   I've hung on to some of the inventory I originally had and it's wholesale value is worth about 3x what I paid for it some years ago.

I'm operating on a shoestring, it's just me and my wife doing it all.  The big change since I last did direct-retail is the raise of social -- and I'm planning to lean on it hard, FB, Twitter, Pinterest, Linkedin, etc..  In this space there are endless topics to talk about, we put up a blog on the site and the plan is to do a couple of articles a week and leverage them as much as we can.

Judging from the posts here, getting into retail seems to be a thing right now for us, with Chunkford & DB busy with their own projects.

Anyway, the plan with this thread is to keep a sort of business-diary -- I'll come here and post as things unfold.
