The book publisher Penguin is printing more copies of George Orwell's dystopian classic "1984" in response to a sudden surge of demand.

On Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning the book was #1 on Amazon's computer-generated list of best-selling books. The list reflects hourly book sales.

The 68-year-old novel appeared on the list on Monday, hovered around the #6 spot for much of the day, rose to #2 by Tuesday afternoon and then hit #1.

Lower down on Amazon's best sellers list are two other classic novels with similar themes: "It Can't Happen Here," by Sinclair Lewis, and "Brave New World," by Aldous Huxley.

Apparently, due to the new phrase "alternative facts" created by Trump senior adviser Kellyanne Conway.

Water Cooler / For those with a sweet tooth and needing to lose weight

I have a problem with chocolate cake.

And, I'm not even joking. When I crave chocolate cake, I bake a cake and eat the entire thing in a roughly 12 hour period.

In the past, to prevent myself from doing this, I have to stop and just stand there and think about anything else but cake. Grit my teeth and wait for it to go away.  But weight watchers has a solution:  make a small cake to stop the cravings and just eat that.  It's all about portion size.

The recipe is called 3-2-1 cake.

Mix together an angel food cake mix with any other type of cake mix -- in my case chocolate.

The angel food cake has all the ingredients needed to just use water to mix the cake mix and have it come out OK. I've actually tweaked this to 1.5 chocolate cake mixes plus one half of an angel food cake to make "the mix."

In a mug, place:

3 Tablespoons of the mix
2 Tablespoons of water
and put in the Microwave for 1 minute.

Now, you can have a small piece of cake instead of the entire thing.

This has changed my life.

Water Cooler / Mr. Bad Joke IS BACK
« on: July 05, 2016, 03:50:53 PM »
I was in a job interview today when the manager gave me his laptop and said

"Here, I want you to try to sell this to me."

So, I picked up the laptop, put it under my arm, walked out of the building, and went home.

Eventually, the manager called me and demanded,"You bring back my laptop RIGHT NOW."

I replied,"$500 and it's yours."

Ba da BUH...

I took a break and am now hitting it hard.

Just wanted to say Hello.

I stumbled upon this paper while looking for something else.  It's a nice little write-up about what motivates different generations of people. An interesting read, if nothing else.,%20Selection%20&%20Talent%20Management%20Model%20tailored%20to%20meet%20UNJSPF%27s%20Business%20Development%20Needs.pdf

"Journalists: The Internet wiped out countless newspapers, and new technology could kill even more journalism positions.

Webb, a former journalist at Newsweek and The Wall Street Journal, said the next culprit will be algorithms that allow news outlets to automatically create stories and place them on websites without human interaction. Robot journalists (fedora optional) are already writing thousands of articles a quarter at The Associated Press. "

Hardware & Technology / Android on HP Touch pad
« on: March 14, 2015, 02:48:55 PM »
I know many of you bought HP Touch Pads during the $99 fire sale. I purchased one for my mom, and she just upgraded to an iPad.. I was thinking I could upgrade the Touch to Android, since the WebOS software is starting to show its age. Have any of you done this? If so, how well does it work?

Is there any other OS I could use that would work well? I have used android on a phone and hated it.

Water Cooler / Where the Southern Accent *really* came from...

"People with a southern accent aren't really ignorant, as most people will believe.  They are just talking like their ancestors so many years ago."

It is very interesting to hear the southern accent "sped up" such that it sounds British or French.

Traffic / Google Propaganda, SEO and Why Marketers Need to Wake Up
« on: January 27, 2014, 10:14:20 PM »
If I were to list what I wanted you to take away from this post, it would be this:

   1. Google’s primary concern is not “the web” or “you” – it’s Google
   2. Penguin is not always fair – Google knows it but… see #1
   3. Panda is not always fair – Google knows it but… see #1
    4. Google talks the talk, but does not walk the walk and there’s nothing we can do about it
    5. “Creating good content” guarantees you JACK sh## when it comes to ranking
    6. SEO is as alive now as it was a decade ago
    7. SEO has evolved to become the result of an actual marketing strategy versus marketing tactics
    8. Your pony is dead
