Monetization / Re: How do you Convince the client they must BUY links?
« on: January 10, 2011, 10:22:02 AM »
I've got a stubborn German client who is not convinced they need to buy links to get links.  They are in the travel sector.

insert knife/gunfight quote here

paid linking and networks are huge in Germany.

the likelihood is your nearest or most successful competitors are up to one or other to some identifiable degree

this might be a reasonable starting point to help highlight the need for funding link acquisition with a "3rd party fees" budget

I'm sure the membership here could put together a similar but mightier/more comprehensive list of the SEO ins and outs of the last 10 years

Who are these title-junk keywords aimed at? Google? Do you they really think that putting “breaking news” in their home page title makes it more likely that Google will rank them higher when people search for that term? It’s like they’re taking advice out of an SEO book from 1995.

Well, they are ranking 2nd for "breaking news" so I'd wager its helping them.   :)

Just cos it was written in 1995 doesn't necessarily mean its no longer true

Web Development / Re: You do recipe sites?

Landing pages are for one day (or week, or whatever). Top ten lockouts are forever.

Interesting to see the level of residual links that are acquired by placing a link on the homepage for one day

So I get this page ranking 3 for "Thanksgiving Recipes" recipes today.  G HP link is gone, but will the residual links and domain authority keep it up there?  Maybe

Web Development / Re: Google preview and colours
« on: November 24, 2010, 02:25:29 PM »
A few observations:

If a preview isn't already stored, they will go off and get one on your request...

Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (en-us) AppleWebKit/525.13 (KHTML, like Gecko; Google Web Preview) Version/3.1 Safari/525.13

Much like Google spidering, it looks as though the preview bot spiders from US IP's.

There may be multiple datacenters storing the previews.  Different images for the same URL have been spotted at the same time, accessing from different IP's.

Just a hunch, and not really delved in to verify this, but looks to me like the Preview bot is accepting cookies.

Added:  this gives a bit more insight

Traffic / Re: tanking QS on adwords

seeing that here too.

30% loss in adwords traffic on one site.  Others seemingly not effected despite QS drop.

No aff redirect but there is a 3rd party tracking redirect.

I'm probably missing something here, but I don't see the incentive to use original-source

On a (possibly) related note, Ben Edelman is after them for hardcoding themselves on finance and health terms etc, and it will be facinating to see where debuts...

This is interesting.  Looks like astute analysis from Edelman.

Some attempted discussion around this at a travel conference in London last week in an "Ask the Engines" session with regards to the hardcoded Google Finance comparison ads.  I can't remember exact figures - but there was a suggestion that moneysupermarket has measured a significant hit to their organic traffic since Google put their own result above the organics.

I say  attempted as naturally the engines weren't motivated - or able - to serve up straight answers to questions not directly related to PPC.

If the number of paid clicks has gone up by 5% - I'd be very interested to know if the number of free clicks has gone down by 5% also.

Anyone drawn any numbers themselves on this?
