Monetization / That Ad Infested Flow

I thought I'd never say this, but I agree with Texas on this.  There is a demand for small ICE trucks and if US manufacturers are not going to build them then we should be allowed to import them.  And frankly, it doesn't have to just be Kei trucks, I'd love to be able to buy a new Chevy S-10 or a, small not midsized, Ford Ranger with a modest 4 cylinder engine.  Remember those?

This whole business of everything having to be a giant monster and cost a fortune is BS.

>Kagi is built using Google data

Kagi is currently using Brave search, Yandex and Mojeek for their primary meta results and Marginalia plus their own Telcis (Sp?) for their "Small web" search.  Somehow Brave search has reverse engineered their index and ranking by copying Google.  Nobody seems sure of the details about how Brave has done this and nobody has ever spotted a user agent identifying itself as being from Brave search.  So there is some sort of connection Google but sort of murky and IMHO dodgy.

I have not tried it, but people seem to like Kagi, which shows you can build a decent meta-search engine with Brave, Yandex and Mojeek.  Also my traffic from Kagi has gone up (but not to commercial levels) since Kagi went to these sources.

If Google sends no traffic there is no reason to give any of the Google-bots access.  (May not work that way in the commercial web, but in the non-commercial web, it makes sense.)

One slight problem:

You know what the biggest problem with pushing all-things-AI is? Wrong direction.
I want AI to do my laundry and dishes so that I can do art and writing, not for AI to do my art and writing so that I can do my laundry and dishes.

She's got a good point.  It's just like our robotics discussions:  RC wants a robot puppy, I want a robot that will shovel snow off the sidewalk and steps.  Practical stuff so we can get on with having some fun.

I've seen mention in the press that tire sales are way up in regions with a lot of EV's.  I didn't realize it was this bad.

>6,000 miles

Yikes this is into the old bias-ply (pre radial) tire wear territory.

Here's a minute by minute timeline of the last 5 minutes before the collision.

It sounds like everybody tried their best but without engine power there was not much they could do.

The harbor pilot noticed the ship starting to swing right, in the direction of one of the piers holding up the Key Bridge. At 1:26, he called for the tugs to return; he urged the captain to try to get the engine back up and directed the crew to steer hard left. As a last ditch measure, at 1:27, he ordered the crew to throw down the port anchor.

Questions are being raised about the level of physical protection provided to the bridge piers.  It's a legit question but still annoying coming from the insta-experts on social networks.

>glimpse

It's going to take awhile just to remove the wreckage.  That's a lot of steel.

This has to scare the s### out of anyone trying to offer an ad supported tier of services or content (ie. WordPress.com, etc).

>tracking

That's the thing.  I don't mind a site serving their own native ads, and it's amazing how few sites do this.  It's the ad networks that I mind, cos they're tracking everything.

Traffic / It's now 2500 search engines.
« on: March 27, 2024, 10:13:50 AM »
When I get bored I browse through the comment spam on my WP blog.  It quite amusing.

So remember the old "Submit your URL to 1500 search engines" spam we used to get by email?  Well recently I got comment spammed to "Submit your URL to 2500 search engines".  1. Here +20 years later and with Google as the only search engine this spammy pitch is still making the rounds, 2. the alleged number of search engines is now at 2500 so we have search engine inflation.

It was interesting seeing this old old spam still making a rare appearance as a blast from the past.  Some others like time shares seem to have completely died out.

The ship definitely had a power failure as it approached the bridge.  If it had touchscreens I wonder how long they take to reboot?

American auto industry has been targeting only the high rollers and early adopters, people that don't blink at laying down over $60K for a car.  That's a very limited market.

The Amazon website has become so filled with advertising garbage it's now a chore to shop there where it used to be a good experience.
