Early on they needed the money.  But now after your 5th 757 jet they can afford to be picky.

That is a good point Aaron.  Also I think Amz low prices on house brand stuff keeps pressure on competitors to keep prices low and sets a certain minimum for quality too.

I'm seeing more Amazon brands in my Amz serps but this could be because I have searched specifically for Amazonbasics several times, clicked on and bought various house brand products recently.

PS: they even have Amazon dish washing liquid now.  Or was it mouthwash?  I forget.

Smoking at the bar! How old are those pics?

>old

Legendary.  Almost Arthurian.

Well it's working, I just ordered a cheap set of Amazon Basics flatwear that was about $5 less than the closest competitor.

I don't really have a big problem with this.  It reminds me of Sears in it's prime: Sears never led the way with anything and most of their house brand stuff was a less artful version of the name brands, but was cheaper and functional for the most part.  I see the Amazon Basics the same way.

The announcement today is that the Librem 5 phone will offer and fully support Ubuntu Touch OS.
https://puri.sm/posts/ubports-ubuntu-touch-on-librem5-collaboration/

This is good news because there has been little word from Gnome about what it will look like on a 5 inch screen.  KDE has Plasma Mobile but it looks Beta-ish and I don't have confidence that they will be ready by Jan 2019.  Ubuntu Touch has had years of work poured into it and has quite a few apps ready to go.

>stubble-bearded, beer-drinking, old-timers.

That is what I want to be in a couple of years from now.  Happily throwing quniona chompin, skinny jeans wearing people who are drinking $10 coffees that took two minutes to order, off the pier.

No wonder I've been encountering more and more Amazon brands in lots of diverse categories.

Hardware & Technology / Amazon working on home robot

Amazon may be working on a home robot

https://techcrunch.com/2018/04/23/amazon-is-reportedly-working-on-a-home-robot/

No word on what it might do, but I, humbly, suggest it should pass the Brading Test:

1. Can it make tea?
2. Can it fetch a beer?
3. Can it order a pizza delivered?
4. On command: can it find the cat, spouse, household kid, and report back.

Another factor in the mom and pop demise: malls.  Keeping in mind that the fall of the mom and pop has been a decades long process, when huge indoor malls and later huge strip malls anchored by Big Box stores, it raised the bar money-wise for opening up a store: rents were high, furnishing the store to a much higher standard, minimum square footage, the costs rose to a level were only a big corporate retailer could afford to locate there.

Agreed. Net gain to actually produce our own stuff in country even if it is 100 percent robots.

I don't mind paying more for quality* goods made in the US or made in countries that have standards (Canada, UK, EU come to mind.)

*Quality and competition are important.  I remember the 1970's well when American made consumer goods seemed cheesy and low quality and Japanese stuff worked and was more reliable.

Linux computer maker System76 is moving manufacturing from China to the US.  They will start with desktop computers first to learn how to do it then move on to laptops, so this is a multi year process.

https://opensource.com/article/18/4/system76-us-manufacturing-plant

1. Hopefully this is the first very tiny step in a larger trend.
2. Although this has been in planning for years, it's probably a good idea given the deterioration of relations between China and the US.
3. I suspect they will automate the manufacturing as much as possible.

For System76 this seems like a part of a larger strategy.  The company used to use Linux Ubuntu exclusively but has recently launched their own flavor of Linux called Pop!_OS.  They seem to want to take more control of their upstream sources.  I suspect the goal is to quietly become a third brand in computer hardware and operating systems.

Okay RC, but if one day, you discover your Roomba in the garage, nonchalantly coming out from under your car, check the break lines first before driving off.
