Good list. I would add to natural events:

Blizzards
Brush or forest fires

My current car is a Subaru.  I've driven through enough snow storms over the years so I liked the idea of all wheel drive plus ground clearance.  Just in case.

So think about an all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive as a bug out vehicle if you can afford it.

I keep a bunch of emergency stuff in each vehicle:

simple tools
folding shovel
space blankets
chem light sticks
Water heater pot that plugs into cigarette lighter
Swiss army knife etc.

A word on Swiss Army Knives: they are inexpensive enough that you can buy a bunch and salt them around: vehicles (cars, ATV's, motorcycles), bug out bags, boat etc. Check Amazon.

CB could be very handy locally in an emergency.

It's not Ham, but I have a battery powered short wave receiver that I used to be able to get BBC world service on.  It's been so long I don't even know if they are still transmitting in SW.  Anybody know?

I can't watch American news. It's all listen to NPR, BBC or watch DW, France 24, or NHK for me.  I read the paper because local govt is important but for national news AP has gone downhill.

> prepper thread

I can see two types of Prepper threads:

1. Soft Prepper - breakdown in global trade, shortages that are not life threatening but change lifestyle. Breakdown in trust in financial institutions .  At it's worse the soft prepper scenario is a bit like what happened to the Russians after the fall of the USSR or the Great Depression.  Life and govt still clanks on but there are big disruptions in jobs, currency, finances, ownership, pensions etc.

2. Hard Prepper - real dramatic breakdown in govt and civil order.  Like giant solar electromagnetic pulse scenario that RC talked about previously. Food, fuel, water, services shortages that could threaten life and health.

>gold silver

I'd say keep some gold and silver assets but not the whole farm.  Remember the US gov't outlawed individuals owning gold (except jewelry) during the Great Depression.

But yeah, I've been thinking about silver coins myself

Water Cooler / Marmite Shortage in UK
« on: October 13, 2016, 10:01:32 PM »
Soylant Black Marmite is in short supply in the UK.

http://time.com/4529747/marmite-shortage-tesco-brexit/

This is a bit like the 2012 - 2014 Great Ammunition shortage in the USA. Normally, the US would come to Britain's aid in their hour of need, but alas, since it isn't packed with sugar it isn't even made here. Canada has banned it, so no CARE packages from the New World.  I think South Africa still makes it and then there is the Aussies and Vegemite if you can pry it out of their hands.

Beware of Russian and Chinese copies, with dubious ingredients appearing on eBay within the next few days.

God's speed.   ;)

If I didn't have old Yahoo Directory listings tied to some accounts I would have killed them long ago. I wonder if people will start terminating their accounts after this.

I keep threatening to terminate my Yahoo mail accounts but never have. But with Yahoo eroding and sale pending it might be time.

In Yahoo!'s defence, Gmail and Hotmail were probably forced to do the same thing.

It's for the best.  It will bring down the noise in the reviews area.
