OTOH insurers are giving a break to cars with anti-theft devices: Tracking, theft alerts to owner, remote engine shut-down.

The tracking is a double edge sword of course, re. privacy.

That battlefield is to be always listening to you in your home.

Dave Bowman: Hello, HAL. Do you read me, HAL?
HAL: Affirmative, Dave. I read you.
Dave Bowman: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.
HAL: I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

Amazon already has Echo, Google, Apple and MS are cooking up something similar.  Oh yes and Samsung is listening through your smart TV with more to come.
Some thoughts on how it could change search:

Also a good study about how Echo users use it and where:

Interesting comparison of current Voice Recognition abilities:

While having something connected to the internet and always on creeps me out, I can see the utility: I often grab a tablet to search for things or ideas I see while watching TV.

Makes sense for TOR to switch to DDG because of privacy and DDG is not over burdened with ads.

I have the same feeling.  That said, I find myself posting less and less personal stuff online.

So what are they spending money on?

I see a lot of foodies out there that are willing to spend at a good restaurant.  Ditto on brew pubs.

I learned a lot from that.  I always thought corn liquor or bourbon was king forever in the South.  Interesting bit on Southern beer too, Prohibition really did a lot of damage to our Sacred Drinking Heritage.

Not to mention: my new hot water heater has a computer chip and a circuit board in it.  LED flashes codes and the plumber says they can plug in and get diagnostics.  Hot water heater tanks are not made as well as they used to be, plumber says anything over 10 years is borrowed time.  So now it's a race as to which fails first: the brain box or the tank.  At least it was made in USA.

Yes.  I replaced my 6 yr old dishwasher.  New one takes twice as long to go through a wash cycle.  Uses less water to meet EPA standards which is probably good for California and the SW USA but I have no shortage of water here.   Does not clean as well as the old one and is drawing electricity all during the longer cycle.

Over the stove microwave died after 4 years, nice lady at the independent repair shop told me the $$ numbers over the phone to maybe fix it, and said "you might do better just going to Lowes and get a new one."

Neighbors, all with appliances about the same age as mine, have had refrigerators, dishwashers, microwaves all die.  And yes it is often the circuit boards that fail.  Seems like the fancier the appliances with more electronic bells and whistles fail first.

Gee, the judge unsealed her own ruling to tell us citizens about it.  How nice of her.

Lack of maintenance might also be an American habit.  I remember seeing a documentary about a bridge in New England.  There had been a bridge there since colonial times.  Like 8 bridges in all.  Each one either was allowed to collapse or had to be condemned due to lack of maintenance starting from the first bridge which was a privately owned  toll bridge to later publicly owned bridges after the road became state owned.

I'm not sure I like the sound of this: huge columns of even more trucks on the roads.  Roads are expensive to build and maintain (if we bother to maintain them) and require massive subsidies.  I'd rather see more goods transported in the US by rail and then via truck the last 100 miles.

Personally, the whole idea of self driving cars creeps me out unless I get too old to drive myself safely, and even then the automated car probably won't let me keep the turn signal on all the time.   ;D

Indiana gets most of it's electric from coal.  Thing is many coal plants are approaching end of life and because of public pressure and anticipated government regulation, they will not be replaced with new coal fired plants.

Traffic / Reddit under surveillance?
« on: April 02, 2016, 12:20:03 PM »
Reddit may have been served with a national Security letter.  Recipients of such letters are forbidden to either confirm or deny their being served with such letters.  But they can say if they have never been the recipient of said letters.  Libraries in the US sometimes use this "canary" indicator.  Anyway, Reddit just published their annual report and omitted the line saying, they have never been the recipient of a national security letter.  People noticed.

This comes from the Daily Mail so take it with a grain of salt.

Not surprised.
