1  Why We Are Here / Water Cooler / Re: Why America’s roads are in tatters on: December 08, 2017, 08:54:35 PM
I think he will be good in that post. Thanks for the followup.

We are just starting to see decommissioning of Indiana state highways here. If a municipality wants to take over responsibility for a stretch of state highway through their town the state will let them.  40 years ago the state would have laughed at them. I expect this to spread to a general decommissioning of many streets that have a state highway destination especially in urban areas.

County governments are already facing the reality of returning some little used rural roads to gravel or even dirt.
2  Why We Are Here / Monetization / Re: Google and Facebook now account for 25% of all ad sales, online or off on: December 08, 2017, 11:58:40 AM
At least there are two now. For a long time it was just Google for everything.

I stumbled across the link.  Iowa can't maintain all its roads. Most states can't and know it but keep silent due to political reasons.

I forgot about roaches.

As mentioned in the article, fire control of the main guns of the Iowa class battleships was calculated by a gear work fire control computer.  US WW II submarines also had a clockwork computer for setting the course for torpedoes.

In the early 70's I got a tour of the computer lab at Standard Oil of Indiana's refining HQ in Naperville IL.  They had two big rooms, one completely filled with an transistor based analog computer, the other room was filled with a computer which must have been a analog digital hybrid. If I remember correctly they were used to model oil refining processes. I got to play Lunar Lander.

Roll forward a few years I'm at university, the PC had not been invented yet but I'm on a terminal playing Lunar Lander.

Roll forward a few years, I buy my first computer, KayPro II, Zilog Z80 chip, CP/M 2.2, and the game that came with it - Lunar Lander.
6  Why We Are Here / Water Cooler / Re: Bacteria Can Live In Ice Cubes, But Not In Whisky on: December 06, 2017, 06:07:25 PM
I wonder if the tannins from aging in oak barrels make whisky more effective against bacteria than vodka?

This is the endgame, after they kill off all humans it's mutant killer rats VS AI killer robots.

If you live on an active earthquake fault line you might expect a little government regulation on construction practices.  That's exactly what government is for.

This reminds me of a story :

During the filming of the movie, "The African Queen" on location in Africa everybody was worried about coming down with dysentery.  Katherine Hepburn took elaborate precautions but still caught it along with most of the cast and crew. Director John Huston and Humphrey Bogart took their own precautions :  they avoided all other liquids and drank only whisky during the entire movie shoot even using it to wet their tooth brushes. They never got sick.
10  Why We Are Here / Economics & Investing / Re: Jeff Bezos > $100 billion on: November 27, 2017, 02:05:13 PM
Quite a contrast because Amz treats their customers very well.  Which is refreshing because so many companies, retail and otherwise, treat the customer like they are dirtbags or at best with indifference
11  Why We Are Here / Web Development / Re: Do Blogs still matter? on: November 27, 2017, 12:29:44 PM
Thanks.  Sometimes I just need to have experts confirm my suspicions: blogs are the new Geocities, unless you have name recognition.

I could promote said content over social media but then it becomes a matter of how closely I want it to be associated with my name on the Internet.

Let's say you have knowledge on a topic that you concider pretty good. You write a series of how to articles on a new Blogger blog and publish.  You do little or nothing to promote the content, no swapping links with other bloggers, no advertisements.

Is that content ever going to get found?
13  Why We Are Here / Economics & Investing / Re: What are the new work opportunities that come with Driverless cars? on: November 22, 2017, 01:05:37 PM
If we are talking about shared driverless car schemes then somebody is going to to be paid to clean the interior regularly.  Especially after use by people with projectile vomiting kids, drunks, incontinent dogs etc.  And someone will have to get the crayons and candy wrappers out from between the seats.  This is why I don't see self driving car sharing as workable.

Rednecks will be safe in their homes. The porch will collapse when that thing jumps on it.

Amazing.  Terminator images were flashing through my mind.  Luckily, I don't think that thing will fit through my front door.
