3 updates in 10 days - WTF?
« on: October 09, 2012, 02:11:56 AM »
EMD then Panda then Penguin
It looks at this point as if they are trying to fix the previous updates with the new ones not being happy about the results
Or maybe it's (also - doesn't have to be instead) G's way of trying to keep webmasters/SEOs busy analyzing as opposed to doing things that actually matter.

Anyways, my reply to G's sh## from now on is this: http://www.keepcalm-o-matic.co.uk/p/keep-calm-and-continue-spamming/

By constantly tweaking they're moving the goal posts and making the job that much harder by having to adapt.
Eventuality it will make all the wannabes drop off which TBH isn't a bad thing.

Yea, too many wannabes in the industry lately thinking they know SEO after a week of training or something

not sure it will, there have been wannabes around for years now and they all keep spouting "just do what Rand says and be whitehat, and content marketing and fluffiness" without ever worrying that nothing they do actually competes at the sharp end. Unless they're constantly being replenished, they don't seem to be dropping off to me!

It's still such a rapidly expanding market, there is room for everyone, almost without regard to their competence. I spoke to Nick Wilsdon at Brighton, and one thing he said struck me. He said he keeps seeing people he has passed over for junior roles due to lack of experience keep popping up at other agencies with "Senior Whatever" type job titles. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed rule, for now

a year ago everyone spammed and blog network/link farmed.  Penguin 1 and 2 stopped a lot of that and many went legit.  Penguin 3 then kicks a lot of those trying their best to be legit.  Post penguin 3 I can only see more people turning towards mini burner sites, why invest real time on real content and real offsite relationships if it's all for nothing??  I think the SERPs are going to get a lot worse over the next few months.

Honestly I don't know what a good seo looks like now, obviously 90% of seomoz readership isn't, but is someone who can get a site ranking within a week make 5 figures a month until the next penguin rolls out a good seo?

Depends on the goals, I think. There will always be corporate SEO where you have to care about long term and the brand - and then there are those niches where you only care about making money and nobody cares about branding and such stuff. IMHO there is nothing wrong with either model but of course different methods apply.

Plus somebody has to look after the fundamentals, which may be ancient news and ridiculously simple to us but is still Greek to Ma and Pa.

Plus with local search we have come a full circle: SEO at one time had a lot to do with submitting to search engines and directories, and now with local search claiming your bricks and mortar business site on the local search maps/directories is also important.  Its similar yet different at the same time.

Going back to the original topic, I think we sometimes give G too much credit and attribute human motivation to technical glitchery.  I've been seeing three sets if results in the last few days, but it seems like they are having issues with the implementation -- not like its a policy decision.

Agreed, the disavow tool has really screwed n00b SEO as well.

I've had a site dance like mad after some good marketing tactics ;)  and after a few weeks the site came stronger than ever. I simply waited...

This patent that Google filed is very interesting regarding this:
