After switching to DuckDuckGo a while back I make sure none of my browsers defaults to GG anymore. After a while you see that the other SEs aren't as lacking in quality as they were before. However, I wonder if this is just the result of people being given a default that they never change, or if it's people actively making a decision to use other SEs. I'm guessing it's more of the former...

I suspect you are right, but that is telling in a way too.  To me it means that google, yahoo and bing are close enough that a lot of people will not miss the difference.

yes, with you thre,  it does take some getting used to switching. There are a few surprises to of things that are lacking. But Bing is catching up I think.
