Schema seems to come in and out of vogue. I remember Yahoo (Search Monkey?) pioneering some of the structured data stuff for search before Google jumped on the Schema bandwagon. Followed by years of hysteria with very little value back to publishers bar those in the review space.
Structured data always seemed to me to be very non-Google-like, where Google would endeavour to find structure in data with or without prescribed formats.
With Google for Jobs, Google are finally using Schema in a more fundamental way. You don't get to play unless you're Schema markup is compliant.
Maybe now there is another wave of Schema love coming.
