They have been slowly removing bits for a while now. It's a bit crap really.

Contacts in Gmail (which can feed android) just had a big facelift/reorg on the desktop version. I had noticed it seemed more stand-alone.

Having all services tied together, particularly youtube profiles was really a bad idea.  Youtube comments are basically for low-quality anonymous noise.  I get that they were trying to push signups and that they figured they might as well push their existing user base over, but it'd be like trying to merge 4chan and Linkedin.

I'd bet there were a lot of unhappy trolls when the Youtube comments were linked to real-name accounts.

One of the most awful things currently is that Google had you create G+ profiles so of course you created

First name: My
Last Name: Company

Then the came out with Pages then Google My Business.

Result - I've had two businesses where I cannot untangle the mess, am locked out of one of the accounts. They are unlinked and can't be linked or deleted and... total cluster. If there were a way to pay Google $250 to fix this problem, I would be on the phone right now. But Google is The Castle. Unreachable, unknowable, inscrutable.

So I am hopeful that this official announcement will help with this problem:

And for people who already created Google+ profiles but don’t plan to use Google+ itself, we’ll offer better options for managing and removing those public profiles.

Please make this actually work!

Google+ always reminded me of walking into one of those sterile, 1950's - 1970's buildings that were so plain and uninspiring you just wanted to get back out as quickly as possible.  My other problems were thus:

I don't have time for a third social network besides FB and Twitter unless its going to be unique and fun of which G+ was neither.

I don't want to hand Google more info about my life, especially on a platter.

I kinda resented the linkage bit and being forced into G+.

Add to Brad's list
 - inability to post except when logged in (everywhere else lets you share posts between networks with Buffer, Hootsuite, etc)

I liked Google+ (before they started hacking parts off it).
Platform wise it was way ahead of both twitter and Facebook (although FB have been stealing ideas back).  However people didn't get that it was different.  Most of the lively stuff happens in communities.  You joined communities to get those posts in your stream because your mum/wife/neighbour weren't on it.  That side worked really well.

However every "google+ is dead" story sends people away.  They never got the traction to justify it as a social network (although I still maintain that wasn't the original aim, just one of the carrots to get everyone to ID themselves).  User numbers weren't as bad as some of the press liked to suggest. They basically signed up, couldn't find their Mum and called it a ghost town.  It wasn't great though and with people keep leaving it has all become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I like it as a work network (facebook meets linked in), but more of the people I use it to communicate with have left, so I tend to use it less.  Not sure I'll replace it though.  Twitter is just an annoying torrent of unstructured noise after g+ and facebook is the usual bollocks.

Rooftop-

I think you pinpoint one of the problems: G+ was not intuitive.  People just did not know how to get the maximum out of it without someone to guide them.  Of course one can say that about FB, but FB got there first and so did mom, sis and that girl you wanted to date back in high school.

>>social networks

I still say some of the best social networks are old fashioned forums, including The Core.

I could be way way out on this, but I think, given an acceptance its not going to be the FB killer (and yes I agree they didn't set out to do that but I think at one stage they had aspirations) they are now prepping it to maximise ad revenue.

Collections, seperating video so people will actually create for G+ not for youtube, pushing it more as a place to hang out with your mates in a club room (and they do have some great functionality for that) all mean that there will be some very clear definition of interests for those people using it.

Now I want to get my ad in front of a million geeks who might be interested in wearable tech? Where will I go. Take your pick of these audiences https://plus.google.com/collections/featured and we'll serve your ads across all google properties, cos we have that login tied up...

Worth a scan

Google launched Plus without a clear plan to differentiate the service from Facebook. It bet on a charismatic leader with a flawed vision, ignored troubling indications about the social network's traction (or lack thereof) with users and continued throwing features at the wall long after many had written Google+ off for dead....

...Google+ is shifting from a Facebook clone to more of a Pinterest lookalike to see if it can build momentum. At the same time, Google is investing resources to build more standalone social products like the Photos app, which has generated plenty of positive press.

I don't get why google photos has had such a good reception.

Google+ photos was actually really good, but it was largely ignored (because the "google+ is a wasteland and nothing more" narrative was well established by then). They then removed the best part (brilliant and simple editing tools) and made is a standalone product and people get excited.  The auto-tagging is definitely the future, but lets be honest - at the moment it is crap.
